I re-imagined DIC for 2018! [UI/UX]

Posted 02 March 2018 - 01:13 PM

I joined DIC the other day because I am passionate about programming and design and wanted to connect with like-minded individuals. However, I found the UX to be rather dated and cluttered. I took this as an excellent opportunity to show off how a fresh theme could re-invigorate this community as well as further improve my portfolio in the long run.

Go check it out on Dribbble and remember if you are a member there, giving a like is always appreciated!

Why is it tilted and not flat on?

I think what modi meant to say was that it looks pretty damn good! I think perhaps we would need to have more elements in it since there is a lot of content on DIC but that is certainly a clean look to this board that would go a long way. Maybe you can talk to skyhawk133 to see if there is some way you can help.

:)

It is what a lot of designers do on Dribbble. It just is for aesthetics. Here is a front view.

Yeah definitely needs more if it were to be made into an actual theme. This was just a glimpse at what a new theme could look like as you can only show so much in a Dribbble post.
It would be cool to make this a reality, but I'm not holding my breath based on initial impressions from browsing the site.

I think the old Dream.of.Neotifa theme looks best to be honest. ;)

Naw but seriously looks good.

Hi,

It is very difficult to judge such design. The main problem with the website as it is now is that it is cluttered, and you have removed a lot of things, so it does feel a lot cleaner, a lot more breathable, no doubt, it is easier on the eye, but what do you do with what you have removed ?

Removing stuff can actually be an excellent idea in order to highlight navigation paths, but the motivation for doing it should be the usability, not how much better the home page looks. It is like making a door without a door knob: sure, it is more "smooth" but now you have to do weird moves with your key to operate the door. If you remove things, you should have reasons related to usability, not looks.

Apart from that there are issues with proportions, contrasts and consistency, but is can be improved.

I don't mind the current design too much, but this definitely looks pretty sweet (as I starting point anyway ;))

as long as I can still find the sections that I'm looking for within three clicks then that's good.

I also like the "Featured content" and the "Ask a Question"

Can you write the code so that it:
1> Automatically suggest a group for the question being asked.
2> Automatically show Similar post that have already been answered.

Looks great, how will it look on mobile?

This is purely a conceptual design. It hasn't been implemented in code as I was never commissioned by the site owner to do so. For mobile, I'm imagining the sidebar would just collapse below the forum nodes like any other forum. The menu items would collapse into a hamburger.

I would say it needs some work, because I am not a nice person :P. I think everything looks oversized, but maybe that's just me! Talk to Skyhawk and see if you can help in some way!
