Health check pages for Pubnub and Redis?

Posted 18 April 2018 - 01:11 PM

I'm an admin for a company, and we use a lot of web apps for our business. I'm now tasked with monitoring many aspects of a new platform that has been rather spotty with reliability issues, mainly with connections to both Pubnub and Redis. I have a monitoring program which will do a health check get command for a web page to make sure it is constantly up. (I honestly don't know how often it does the get on the page, probably somewhere about 5 or 10 minutes.) What management wants me to do is monitor the resources we use in Redis and Pubnub with that same tool.

I'm hoping someone here knows if there is a health check page for these services that I can use to configure this tool. Do you guys know of anything?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

I would suggest using the actual endpoint that your application contacts to make sure you get the expected response back.

Our programmers say they use a special SDK for those calls, so no web pages involved.

Do you have a redis server running locally, and you're trying to check the status?

No, it's a public Redis server. I found which one in the app config, but it doesn't give a page address in the config, just the server name.

Well, if there aren't any web pages involved with the server, then I don't know how you can check the status with an HTTP request. I don't know specifically how those work, but if those servers aren't listening on port 80 or 443 then you can't test it with an HTTP request, the server obviously needs to be able to respond to whatever you're using to test it.

I can't say enough nice things about Nagios. Write a check that acts like a client, & code it to your specific requirements.

I do know they utilize HTTPS web services, and listen on 443. I also know some of the Pubnub page addresses, but they mandate a UUID switch in the page call that is specific to the customer. Redis gives absolutely nothing on that. I was hoping someone knew of a specific "health check" page built into either API that I could use to address directly. (We build that into our internal web apis. It gives a 200 response when things are good and a 404 or 500 response when things are down. Why don't others?) I would think that something like that is pretty simple, and just known knowledge from programmers like you guys. If not, then I'll continue looking.

If there is a forum specifically for redis or pubnub, I would check there. Personally, I haven't used either one so I don't know what their capabilities are.

Again, I would write a nagios check in CURL, or there are built in page checks for return code on both http & https protocols.
