Hello! Questions from a new IS major looking to formulate my goals

Posted 27 April 2018 - 09:18 AM

Hi everyone!

This is my first post, and I'm still somewhat new to the site in general as a lurker.. but it seems like a great place to start discussing my projects and schooling in the coming years!

I'm a community college student looking to transfer to a major university within a semester or two, and I plan to major in Information Systems. I'm just looking for any advice/guidance on what to start getting background knowledge on, and where to start learning things. I have been learning java source code over the last year, it's my first language and I'm still in the growing-pains stage of learning the general syntax and structures of the language. I know very little about certifications or much else beyond that...

Any and all advice would be great, or simply sharing what you're doing and the specifics of learning that you are undergoing/have undergone.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Essentially, yes, I'm still learning about the exact skills in which my major will be training me...

I also was hopeful to hear from any graduates with IS degrees (especially anyone in the DMV) that could tell me about their general path of learning, their goal certifications, etc etc

Beyond that, I was also curious about the role that skills in java source code could play in my overall repertoire(sp?)!

Thanks for replying!

DMV? Like the governmental office?

The best bet it to eyeball the degree outline. Check out what the class overviews are, hit up any of the class specific sites for a current syllabus and see what's there. On the whole don't forget - you are taking classes because you don't know the area so trying to scattershot over prep may not be a good use of time.

Is this 'Informational Systems' degree a programming orientated one? Networking/system admin? Business slanted?

It seems to be more network/system admin geared with some extra business management-type courses blended in.

and no, DMV as in DC/Maryland/Virginia :D/>

However, I will add that the intro the the core courses involve mostly learning Java and C++

Ah.. well programming will be a minor bullet point then, but yeah - knowing the concepts of programming help your abstract thinking as well as give you an extra tool in the toolbox to use when needed. I would recommend picking up a book on java programming, work through it, and see how it all goes. The concepts are the more important part than, say, the syntax.. but the syntax is pretty similar to other languages like c++, C#, etc.

Noob question, is the management of networks and the learning of system administration and so forth similar to using programming languages to write code?

No, that is not a particularly accurate analogy.
