I just made my first program for my company but the truth is..

Posted 28 May 2018 - 03:43 PM

I copy/pasted code from bunch of different website and put them together and modified it to work with my company. I am not sure I should be happy about this but I am IT not a coder and for me to make something that looks good and work without error is an accomplishment. It's a multi level data entry program connecting to our server so yeah.. there's nothing special about it but I did work hard for this.. lol.. data input using multiple panel, update, delete, specific search engine and excel transfer function. Considering I haven't coded anything since my college year java class, should I be happy about this and take it as my first step to become semi-coder or should I be ashamed that I didn't come up these my own? :(

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

It depends: Was the code in the public domain? Was it open source code? Did you give appropriate attribution/credit for the original version of the code? Does your code care one way or another if you use open source or public domain code?

Regarding the last question: some companies have particular policies about this because they may need to keep a "clean room" environment with regards to certain classes of code to prevent the look of conflict of interest.

If in the process of doing and modifying the code that you found, you learned things (as opposed to just mechanically changing things), then you should be proud. Don't be a cargo cult programmer. Take time to learn and understand.

This does not feel like a C# question. Moving over to the Corner Cubicle...

Whilst it is encouraging for you to get something to work there is no fast-lane to becoming a competent programmer; it requires structured learning, time and dedication.

The expression semi-coder makes me nervous but, if your desire is to become an employable coder, then consider courses, books and/or tutorials to gain, or revise, the programming fundamentals.

If you open a book on how to program, & just type what it says, is that programming? I mean, you work out the logic yourself, right? But then just type the function names with your variables in them, is that programming?

@no2 - really? You didn't opt to drive home the "Is this..." meme? For shame.

Who cares if it was public domain, just delete the copyright logo in the source code. It's not like anyone is actually going to realize it's a rip off specially since the OP said he was code cooking. Why do all the work when you don't have too?

Take the credit, you earned it!

@Paradisefalls_ - that is the opposite of how folk should operate.

Folk spent time making something and providing others to use it. At the least you continue giving credit, keep the copy right info, and go about your business.

If they want credit they should charge for the code, An't my fault they were dumb enough to hand it over for free. I mean who does that in this day and age? Perhaps if people started charging for their code there wouldn't be so many starving programmers.

Working for free don't pay the bills, this is why I hate programmers who do this and I don't have a care in the world if I delete their "free" credit within the source code and replace it with my own.
