Language for ML?

Posted 18 June 2018 - 10:24 AM

What language is functional for Machine Learning? I know you can use C and MATLAB but which language has the perfect utilities for this.

There's a plethora of options. C# has Encog plus the wealth of MS's Cognitive Services.. R, Python, and even Java.

Depends what you're trying to do, I suppose. Are we talking about learning ML concepts, or developing tools, or solving real-world problems? For the former, I know Andrew Ng's classic course uses octave, since it's all about the math. For the latter, you would find some existing tool and use it. If you're interested in developing tools, of course, it's up to you, as long as you have reasonably fast math available.

Python is very common for prototyping and exploratory stuff, but I'm not sure if it's considered viable for large problems. I haven't looked at the ecosystem in a while.

I interned at a large news organization a few years back. The data science team was using Python. A year before that, I sat through half of an Intro to data science course, which also used Python. I would say Python is probably a viable tool for ML.

For what itís worth, Iíve been using Sage over the last month for a research problem (linear algebra, group theory, graph theory) and have been very impressed with the available tools. Granted this isnít ML, but some of the tools are related.

I would definitely suggest looking at Python more closely.

Thanks for the data and recommendations both of you. I might select from a range of R, Python and Octave.

I personally find R a little painful, but it's certainly a viable option. If you're looking for an intro, I think Machine Learning For Hackers from O'Reilly uses R for its examples.

I see R more in terms of BI, not ML. Python would be my suggestion.

Python is probably the most common, as noted. Also consider Scala, which is quite common for data science. Julia is something people seem to like, but doesn't have mindshare yet.
