Thoughts about JSF

Posted 13 July 2018 - 10:56 AM

Just out of curiosity. The topic came up recently with a friend and I'm looking for other opinions. But I've used JSF a few times, and while I think it's interesting, I'm left feeling mostly unimpressed. I'm more a fan of using javascript+rest services for my web development(especially because this puts the workload on the browser when rending the page itself, not the server which is what JSF does AFAIK), and he is more into the idea of "JSF is the JavaEE standard for Web Development" idea. Having been around the block a bit, and working at very large tech companies, I know that many Java Web shops don't use it.

Feel free to give your opinions, and elaborate as much or as little as you'd like.

I'm surprised that nobody has opinions on JSF, which was always a controversial project.

I guess I can be more specific:

Do you use JSF at your workplace?
Do you think it is optimal for what you're doing?
Do you think it is better than using JS+Restful services?
Would you start a new project in it in 2018?
Do you think its stateful nature is harmful?

No.

Most likely no, unless something specific was found that it does would be a benefit.

JSF just isn't that popular. There are some places that use it. More commonly you're going to see a more approachable web framework for serverside rendering or REST + SPA stuff.
