Fast Ways to Learn Programming in Ruby?

Posted 25 November 2018 - 03:16 PM

I'm trying to teach myself a computing language, but I'm not really doing that well. I guess I'm not really being consistent or using the right resources. Things like Code Academy are good for beginners, I guess, but I have trouble remembering what I don't apply, and I think I would do a lot better with some project-oriented lessons instead that better connect the individual pieces for me.

Does anyone have any ideas? I don't really want to pay for an online class, but I would pay for good book on the subject, I guess.

I've tried following along with free video lectures on the subject, but the code is blurry and hard to read. I clearly need better resources.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Books are great on learning topics. Plus most have exercises in between chapters to help.

Okay, any ideas on what books to study? What title(s) would you recommend?

There is really no "fast way" to learn any programming language, including action-scripts which are generally pretty basic. However, I'd recommend you get some good books on whatever programming language subject rocks your boat. But you'd be best targeting some books that give you projects to create and learn from, otherwise what you read does become hard to remember, whereas exercises tend to trend in memory a lot longer for me. If you like, I can recommend some good ones? You can also check some of the "question support forums" for pinned topics on books to read.

The how-to book for ruby comes free with the download iirc. There is also the railstutorial.org/book book but it assumes you know some programming, but it has a chapter on ruby, but is mostly for web apps. It's a good book that I can't recommend enough.

Look up Michael Hartl on Amazon, he covered a good paperback on Ruby in 3 editions and I think he now has them on Kindle. Also look into Obie Fernandez, who has wrote some worth reading material.

Is ruby your focus or what other languages do you want to learn? If you want to learn C#, there are some suggestions on here from other members of dic. A must learn language imo. I believe this was also mentioned above or referred to.

The two book lists we use on the Ruby and the Ruby on Rails IRC channels are:

Ruby: https://goo.gl/wpGhoQ
Rails: https://goo.gl/AXmSPw

Now as far as a fast way to learn? It doesn't exist as others have mentioned.

@sheepings Hartl is the one who wrote the Rails book I suggested (online for free too, but I loved it so much I paid the $50 to buy the book)

@NeoTifa so it is. I guess I missed that since your link wasn't hyperlinked (clickable), I didn't take notice of it.

Papaerbacks are always best, and yea, I think its about 30, 40 dollars on Amazon atm.
