Posted 28 November 2018 - 01:29 AM

I have worked as a software developer for 2 years. My friends said I have an IT look now. Should I be happy ?

I've heard of an IT attitude, never an IT look. Except maybe Chuck ... from that TV show of the same name.

*
POPULAR

I think the "IT look" is just another term for perpetual "are you a moron?" face. There's nothing quite like working in IT to quickly kill any illusion that the majority of the populace is vaguely intelligent.

I feel I may know the answer to this one.

The quintessential IT look, is one of intelligence, wisdom, professionalism, and a very clean-cut appearance.
I first saw it with the images that were shown during the Visual Studio 2005 installation.
They may have been middle-aged, or older, like I am right now (1984 babies holla at yah boi!), but yet they looked
very professional, smart, in-shape, attractive, well-groomed, and above all sane.

This guy from the M-Disc promotional video [ https://www.youtube....h?v=6qjUS746kUw ] nails it!

A clean cut sales suit? Um, no. That's more an IT consultant. They talk a good game but have the tech savvy of a game show host. Such types usually fail on delivery, but if they do succeed it will be due to ability the staff they don't let the public see.

When I think "coder," I'm definitely not thinking weasly, coifed hair dude from James' post. I'm thinking jeans (pajama bottoms of I can get away with it), hair in a bun because it hasn't been washed in two days, not a scrap of makeup, wearing a turtleneck (because the dress code says "business casual"), a scarf (to hide the telltale stains of perpetual food-boob), and sneakers, under-eye bags from countless sleepless nights trying to sort out errors in my head while laying in the darkness, a permanent expression of exasperation masking a sneer, glasses sliding halfway down my nose, and a dirty coffee mug always at my side (used to be accompanied by an overflowing ashtray, but those days are gone). When a coder is dressed to the nines, there's either an important meeting or a job interview in the works.

LOL clean cut middle aged suits?! Dude... lmao. More like scruffy looking nerf herders. Jeans, t-shirt, hoodie, sneakers, shaggy hair and beards, lifeless eyes, anime figurines on the desk, etc. Also, at least in my area, the majority are mid 20s.

Haha that picture is of the guy who butchers technical terms in meetings with the business while the technical resources cringe and IM each other memes about how dumb he is.

That being said, my dress code is business professional, so I'm always in slacks and a dress shirt in the office. I'm also an architect now so I do a lot less coding, but when I have a lot of hands-on-keyboard work to knock out I generally work from home because I write better code with no pants on.

Here's some pic's from the Visual Studio 2008 (directly succeeding VS 2005) installer, as an example.
Notice how clean-cut, and professional they are, despite their age.

The under eye bags are present in all (3) photos I posted.

Stock photo models do generally try to be clean-cut and professional, at least if they're modeling for the "clean-cut professional" portfolio. But we're talking about programmers here. Right now I have my long hair in a ponytail because it hasn't been washed in a few days, I haven't shaved in at least 2 weeks so my beard is looking pretty good, and I'm wearing a t-shirt with a cassette tape, VHS tape, and floppy disk with the words "never forget." Both of my shoes have holes in them because I pretty much have worn them every day since I bought them 3 years ago.

If I had to guess the last time I had a professional do anything with my hair, I would guess it's probably been about 5 years.

I should get new shoes.
