Publishing code for public consumption beyond an academic setting used to be a major milestone for some people, but with GitHub, NPM, and NuGet that milestone seems to be diluted nowadays.

Some other milestones that I can think of:
- First time getting a sprite or polygon to animate across the screen.
- First time playing a simple tune through the speaker or sound card without playing back a sound file.
- Learning the value of source control. (e.g. the first time source control saves your butt!)
- Learning the value of unit tests. (e.g. the first time unit tests keep your from introducing a regression after "a one line fix")
- Learning that self-documenting code is better than writing tons of comments.
- That "a-ha!" or "eureka!" moment when the value of design patterns kicks in.
- First code review in a professional setting.
- First code submission rejection (after a code review).
- Relearning that premature optimization is the root of all evil. (e.g. Spending 2 weeks "optimizing" code that is used less than 10% of the time.)
- Debugging your first memory crash dump without any source code to match it.

Here’s one for you,

First time being in a conference room over the weekend for over 28 hours while actively coding for a deployment that was going out regardless if it worked...

Actually, that brings up a good point. Beyond the first overnighter because of a ship or deployment deadline, there is also the first overnighter just because you were having so much fun writing code!
