Fam I need help, what are some great open-source file server?

Posted 11 December 2018 - 05:53 AM

What I want:

run a low-end linux machine, fix a huge harddrive on it

configure it to a file server by git clone -> sudo make -> my very own file server

It must comes with a webpage front end so I can simply open up a browser on pretty much any device, tablet, PC, laptop etc and start downloading/uploading files. It must use http protocol because let's face it fellas ftp is done.

Can you recommend any?

Open source only, because 1. free 2. I can verify the code, no backdoor, 3. No commercial use whatsoever.

I have searched quite a bit but sadly couldn't find any that meets my criteria.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Not really true, especially when handling actual files, FTP is still one of the better transfer protocols.

As for what you're asking for, do you want a physical server with a web based front end? Have you considered setting up a physical server, getting a public IP and creating the front end you want? Not exactly free, but will get you everything you want how you want it.

Or are you looking for a cloud based setup where you have your data stored offsite on somebody else's servers? Also unlikely to be free but there are options.

Or are you looking for free private version control? For that I use BitBucket, personally, as they are free for small teams (I believe less than 5)

Fam? Uncle Terry is that you? I thought you were still in the poke after the sheriff's chased you for what you did to his daughter. I heard you did it like this, did it like that, and even did it with a wiffleball bat!

Plenty of options.

Cool. However, at the end of the day, a cheap NAS would probably do this better than you or I can.

Sounds like an odd implementation detail.

Well, yes, http would be implicit with a web page. Here's the thing: http is probably the worst way to upload a file to anything. Sure, it can do it, because folks needed it to, but it's not real good at it. Actually, FTP usually smokes HTTP for uploads. HTTP for downloads is reasonable, at which point you could just issue python -m http.server 8000 and move on with your life.

My honest recommendation, as this is what I always end up using, is SSH. Specifically, SFTP. Any *nix system will have this baked in. If you're SSHing over to the box for anything else, it's a no brainer. A myriad of FTP clients support it and clients are readily available for any platform I can think of. I often use it with rsync for simple backups.

As to your web based fixation: how hard did you search? Seriously: http://www.google.co...ver+open+source

Reasonably, from the listings, you'll want to install PHP on your box and you're good to go. I can't recommend one such things tend to be my last choice in file management.

You want security? Avoid web protocols entirely and stick with the SSH. If it doesn't face the internet, then you really needn't worry, however. If you're using wifi, it's the least of your security holes, anyway.

Right, I bought a QNAP device and 6 or 8 hard drives to stuff in it, and "file server" is an option I can enable in the web interface. For the time being, I have 30TB for home backup.

Ha, nah, I have a laptop that I don't want it to go to waste. That's that. I want to config it into a file server.

Even still, please use the appropriate forum. I've relocated this topic to "Web Servers and Hosting". Caffeine lounge is dedicated to shitposting of the aimless type.

Your content runs that risk, regardless of position placement. You can't game the system. Stop trying.
