I myself have experinced the same problem. *shrugs*

Only twice though. Some 17 reformats later I haven't had it happen again... knock on wood. I think it may be something in GRUB, didn't really bother me enough to look for the answer.

If any one else has an opinion for sloth, I'd be listening to. ;)

This is a very common problem in NT variants of Windows. I have no idea how to fix it, it used to happen to me too (back when I used Win2K with a K6-II and an ASUS motherboard). I would simply push the power button before it got a change to reboot. I don't even like my machine turning itself off (I much prefer the "Power down." type of message when halt/shutdown is done), so you can tell how much I liked this behaviour that was completely unrequested :).

:D

That's on purpose.

Each week or so my test machine gets a new OS or fresh install of one of my favorites. It's just the way I try new things out. If it no worky... Me no worry.
;)

I think the last reboot I went through on the Slack box and Mandrake laptop was in April during a power-outage of 7+ hours.

That's wacky. Check Microsoft's KBase for something on that. I bet you could find something.

usually this is a problem with the way power management was installed by windows. couple things you can try would be to, what we used to call at gateway "clear NVRAM". usually this can be done in the BIOS itself but with so many BIOS suppliers out there it's not something i can just tell you to "go here" and "choose this". sometimes it can be as simple as an option like: reset configuration data. note: this is NOT the same as resetting defaults in your BIOS. basicly the first time your computer boots, the BIOS scans all motherboard devices to "know" what its working with. it stores this info in NVRAM (ram that is not erased by powering your system off: thus the reason for the MBD battery... this and the date/time) this needs to be cleared out so that the board can properly identify the ACPI controller again (if this is where the problem is occuring) if you can't find a setting in the BIOS to do this pop the MBD battery out for a minute or so with your PC turned off and not plugged into the wall. this is prolly the best option as sometimes reseating the power cables from the motherboard can help this issue as well.
since this is an installation issue you can also try removing the ACPI stuff inside the device manager. this can cause issues as technically everything is plugged into power and most devices could end up needing to be reinstalled as well. make a restore point before you try this one.
you'll need to also unhide some devices if they are hidden. to do this right, you'll need to add a system variable in system properties. i think you can firgure this out. add DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES with a value of 1. you'll need to completely close ssytem properties and reopen it and the dev mgr to see the effects of this. then go to view and show all the devices. you should get a crapload. i'll also point out that this variable goes away upon reboot.

this isn't an issue limited only to NT flavors of Windows. if you do a KBase search you'll have more luck searching in the Win95 KBase. we went round and round in tech trying to fix this one. sometimes this stuff worked, but most times the sure fix was another reload of the system.
