Search ye ol' amazons for "computer architecture".. sort by most recent and flip through the indexes of a few of the more well rated ones.

Charles Petzold's Code is probably a good place to start

I know you said book, but this lady is the only reason I (technically) passed my operating systems class, she's really good. She has tons of tutorials on other subjects and this, as well as the operating systems course, could help you. https://www.youtube....5TE_yQgeHEuKYrG . This guy is pretty good, too. https://www.youtube....C6wAQ/playlists

Remove the '.' at the end of the link and it should load properly.

I've recommended this elsewhere in this forum, but it's that good.
This free online course on computer architecture is really good. The book not so much, unless you are using it as a supplement for the course.

I loved the book "The Elements of Computing Systems: Building a Modern Computer from First Principles" as it describes everything from simple logic gates to writing a compiler and std library for a custom programming language. To how to build every single layer of computer architecture from the bottom up is just fascinating.

Hm. Browse the "hurt" shelf at MIT Press Bookstore much? :)
(I also have a copy of that one on my shelf... haven't cracked it open yet though)
