McAfee Broke My Work Computer, Destroyed 2 Weeks of Programming Work

Posted 04 February 2019 - 11:35 AM

I was working from home last week and in the middle of a phone call got a message saying that my computer was about to shut down... The computer shuts down and when it comes back up says that McAfee drive encryption had a fatal error and my computer is bricked along with all of my files. Come to find out that when I had connected to the VPN a GP was applied to my machine that initiated the drive encryption, grrrrrrr. So basically I lost two weeks of programming work that I hadn't backed up and now I'm temporarily on a loaner computer that doesn't even have VS installed on it.

I am so antsy and bummed not having Visual Studio ... it feels like a piece of me is missing and I can't install anything on this loaner either. Do you guys feel like a piece of you is missing when there is no IDE?

Anyways, I'm just posting this because I'm having my afternoon covfefe (as I always do) and there's no IDE to put my caffeinated energy into :hammer: :baaa:

Sure.. I could program in notepad or something, but all of my projects are SLN files and it's just not the same without intellisense and the full IDE (libraries, .h, assemblies etc)

So yeah.. McAfee is basically worse than a virus.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

GP? General Patch?

VCS? Veterans Canteen Service ?

What sort of patch encrypts a drive unwarned?

There was a time when Dell was offering "drive encryption". People that were taring down equipment & then selling it on eBay didn't know any better, but if the drive & the motherboard were separated, that drive was now unusable.

Make sure to encrypt the smart lightbulbs before you throw them out. I mean that's the only way to really "trash" and SSD drive, right?

"McAfee Drive Encryption" is a very scary phrase.

As any of my code reviewers would say - I am not a standards kinda guy.

GP == group policy

Yeah, I have to deal that same piece of McAfee crapware on my work laptop. My company is assumes that it's employees will not follow company policy about not storing PHI/PII on their laptops. So on that assumption, they want the HD's to be encrypted so that when the person steals the laptop and pulls out the drive, it'll be useless on the bad guys laptop.

What is stupid with this entire idea is that the company's insistence that it has to be McAfee Drive Encryption. The don't want Bitlocker or any other drive encryption that uses the TPM hardware built into the laptop. When I asked them about why go for McAfee, instead of other drive encryption the response I got was "Because we want to be able to decrypt the hard drive in case your machine dies and you need some critical files. We have a master key for all hard drives." Like you reading this, I went "Say what?!?!? You have a master key? So what happens if bad guy gets the master key?" I got back crickets.

Even better, last year, my laptop died and there were some files I wanted pulled from the machine. I asked them to pull the files for me. They told me they didn't do that for a lowly developer -- yes, even if the files meant the difference between a two week delay or no delay. They only did that for executives. *sigh* So I need to suffer through McAfee Drive Encryption pathetically slow performance (as compared to Bitlocker) for no real reason, other than IT Security can tell all auditors that all drives of machines are encrypted. If we were using Bitlocker, they could still say that the drives are encrypted.

Skydiver feels my pain lol

NeoTifa No I don't use VCS at all I just manually back up my software versions. I'm not collaborating with anyone for this stuff: I make remote administration software, and I'm the only developer who does that here. This isn't open source other than for the company and I don't use any of the VS services for that (I'm on VS community). I do version control but it's not backed up to any server automatically; I have to do it manually.... sooo basically just lost a bunch of work :bananaman:

I don't know modi... completely crazy! At least give me 15 minutes to back up my stuff before you encrypt the drive in the middle of me working.

It wasn't a patch. It was likely the desktop team decided to push out the McAfee software package and they chose the "cannot postpone" option for the package. Very likely they are under pressure from above to get it deployed quickly -- or at least I hope that it was that, rather than they just didn't think. As much as I disparaged my company above, they try to give us an 18 hour grace period for postponing any desktop software pushes and patching.
