I do know that people who use AOL typically don't receive our emails, I get a lot of rejections from AOL. After trying to contact them several times and looking into the situation and not being able to figure out the secret ingredient that AOL demands, I just decided to say that we don't support AOL.

Surprisingly, I've had good luck with AOL. Using correct DKIM & SPF records, AOL communications are no problem. But AT&T literally will not give me the time of day. & it's always the case that a potential hosting client is using them, ...

Just to add something else - it seems like the problem is maintaining the contact list. Adding your own SMTP server won't solve that problem, it will just give you a new problem.

Really you just be outsourcing your email system elsewhere but if they are insistent, good luck. I've used this tool before to ensure that reverse DNS works and to help test if what I send out is treated like spam. http://mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx#. For many sites you can sign up to not be blocked for what it's worth here's Google: http://postmaster.google.com/

Be sure to never send short (one word) test emails or random strings, as those are scored badly on filters.
