My computer is taking too long to boot

Posted 04 April 2019 - 01:13 AM

It's been a gradual development, but it's now taking ten minutes or more for the computer to even show the Gigabyte logo, so I'm thinking there's some problem with the motherboard.

Sometimes it doesn't boot at all, and I have to turn it off and on again. Eventually it does, but the whole process can now take half an hour or more.

Ive unplugged everything and tried booting it. No success. I've taken the CMOS battery out and put it back in. No success.

At this point I'm ready to buy a new MB, but is there anything I could do to avoid that?

My MB is gigabyte ga-z97-d3h and I have a i7 processor.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Is it unusually warm?
Which OS is this? If windows are there any 'event viewer' system messages that have the red critical?
Have you checked your hard drive's health?

CPU temp hovers around 30C so not too warm.
I run Windows and Ubuntu, but mostly use Ubuntu, and that's the OS it first tries to boot to.
Havent checked hard drive's health. Didn't know this was a thing. Will see if I can look into it when I get home.

For comparison, I would try booting from an ISO. If the existing OS (either Windows or Ubuntu) has added boot-time tasks & issues, I would want to test on a base condition.

I'm not sure if it's the OS. Once I get to the BIOS, everything's fine. It's just taking ages to get to the point where it can register the delete key.

If that's the case, I hope it's the only issue. RAM's a Heck of a lot cheaper than a new MB.

If RAM was defective, I would expect crashes, not speed issues.

Well, I have had a problem with crashes. Often, Ubuntu boots up, but then crashes when I sign into an account. But that's been happening since I built it. A reset is usually all it needs, so I didn't bother looking into it further.

Could it be related?

@no2 - if folk are lucky they could just download more ram to make up the difference. ;)

So it's not starting at all now. Lights are on, fan's spinning, but I can't even get to the BIOS.

Also tried booting with just one stick of RAM, then the other, and still nothing.

Should I buy a new MB? Or could it be the processor?

Are they blinking? In the old days, a failed POST would show an error code by way of either blinking lights or beeps.

Oh no I just got rickrolled :whistling:

I was about to ask the same thing, if you get any beeping from your system, and if so, how many beeps. Btw, that's still commonly used in modern computers today as a way of fault testing. So if something was dying, it's very likely at some point your PC would sound a beeper. Also, its not your RAM. I would say your HDD is either defective or your CPU needs some juice if its fed water coolant. Alternatively, heatsink compound (Thermal grease). You can pick this up at almost any PC store, and I highly advise monitoring your PC's temperature of its components. This will give you more insight as to a likely cause.
