Well, I guess I'll introduce myself.

Posted 14 April 2019 - 12:21 AM

I'm a 29-year-old hobbyist programmer. I know at my age it's too late to get a job as a professional programmer, so I'm doing the only thing I can do: starting my own business. I have a lot of app ideas, which I plan to implement entirely on my own. Right now I'm just working on random projects that I probably won't be making a living off of at any time. I'm working on writing a 2D game in QBASIC, and I'm also working on learning the X11 API. I document all this stuff on my blog (it's here if anyone's interested in seeing what I'm all about). Anyway, I was just hoping to meet some more people in the programming community. I was using Stack Overflow and 4Chan as my main tech forums prior to this, but I found both those forums to be lacking in a lot of regards. Not to mention 4Chan forces me to turn off my VPN to post, which I don't like. But that's my story. I hope I meet some interesting people and learn a thing or two while here.

Welcome aboard!

A few things...

That's not accurate. Well.. for the most part. Some country specific things may change that.

Why? There are better, more up to date, options for game development.

and 4Chan as my main tech forums

Where abouts in 4chan? It mostly was a wasteland the last I checked.

From what I've heard from many different people who've worked in the industry, if you're a developer then when you turn 30 one of three things happens to you: 1. you go into management, 2. you go off to start your own company, 3. you get fired.

Because QBASIC is fun and I like to use old software.

I use /g/, which is pretty active right now. As of last summer 4Chan is under new leadership, and they've been working to clean up spam, racist posts, and porn on SFW boards.

I don't know where you live, but in the US that is absolutely not accurate.

If I were trying to getting the industry I would be using more relevant languages at all turns, but so it goes. You go get funky with your qbasic.

Weird.. never thought 4chan was anything more than a septic system. Good for the few that are trying to make it less so.

Just looked at /g/.. and, ah.. yeah. That's about where my expectations were in terms of "still a cesspool". Kudos to you for getting some good out of it.

And all of those people are incorrect, for the US. I know people that didn't start until their 40's. I know some that started at bootcamps in their mid 40's and received offers after. Assuming you haven't been living in mom's basement, that means you have life experience in some form or fashion. That experience is beneficial to companies, not a hindrance.

But, welcome.

I'm in my 40's

1.) I don't know any developer who has become management. Lead dev, sure. Senior dev, absolutely. Management? No.
2.) Of course. Those that can churn faster than a 9-5 are going to remove the financial ceiling. But that takes a special skillset.
3.) That's absolutely fucking ridiculous.

The primary goal of any business is to make money. They hire based on a skillset, to build a team to complete a series of tasks for clients. Age is not a factor in any of this.
