We have a server dedicated to all of our state agencies that consistently gets hammered when all of the state workers figure out they need to complete something and jump on at the same time.

We killed this. Another lesson that minor database or query changes have a major impact. Some minor changes and the load on the server is now 2% of what it used to be while still sending out 60 MB/s. It's good to have a win.

Any Clevelandites going to FM-84 tonight at the Beachland Ballroom? I would like to know how the concert was.

Week one of Math Camp ended on Friday! The kids are excited and engaged, and we covered a ton of material! Here are some of the topics we covered this week.

Java Programming: Conditionals, Loops, Arrays, Strings, Linear Search, Binary Search, and the Making Change Problem (including recognizing coin systems where the greedy algorithm does not work).

Logic: Propositions and Boolean algebra, Implications, Rules of Inference, and Lewis Carroll problems.

Number Theory: Converting between binary and decimal, Two's Complement, Divisibility, Modular Arithmetic, the Extended Euclidean Algorithm, and Primality. In particular, we proved that there are infinitely many primes using Euclid's proof! I gave them Goldbach's proof as an exercise.

Worrying that my two youngest children are Valentine and Peter Wiggins from Ender's Game. Be afraid. Be very afraid...

Is this camp 8 hours a day? The amount of stuff you covered in one week nearly equated to an entire semester at my college. Good going, and glad they are so engaged.

Today, I get to sit in the waiting room of the ortho as my oldest gets her braces removed and gets fitted for a retainer. New job is going decently. There is a a co-worker who I think is a bit intimidated by me, but I've decided that's a them problem not a me problem. The role I was hired into will be transitioning into a lead role after 6 months, so my boss has started looking at me to take charge a bit more. It's been an up hill battle to delicately start that process and not rock the boat too much. Apparently the team wasn't made aware of the transition. I'm getting a new found hatred for third parties again as the main software we use isn't in house. It bothers me so much that in order to do simple things it's a "Customization" and we need to wait through their change process.

Back plugging away at this service layer. Hopefully they have my data corrected in the test database so that I can work on parsing it again. Then, I am back in the thick of it trying to figure out pathways and flows in the legacy system. But, three day workweek since they discovered several people were taking Friday off, they made it a mandatory day off as well.

Had a barbecue with my wife old boss and his family Saturday that was awesome.

I work two days this week, go to court Wednesday, need to figure out plans for the 4th still, and have to stay home with the young'un while my girlfriend goes to the cancer center at the University in Chicago on Friday. Really not looking forward to Friday, I feel like I need to be there for her but we can't take the kiddo in to the appointment so even if we went she'd have to be in the room without me.

I'm sure she'll be just fine. <3

Had dance practice yesterday for my first big performance. Thought it was going to be 1 hour. Nope, 4. I'm completely wiped. This week is dress rehearsal, and I have soooooooooooooo much to do: finish my one skirt, make a completely new one, move all the hooks around on my belt and bra, make cuffs, make armbands, make puff sleeves, make my body stocking, make my choker, add beads to my headband, make a veil (or possibly 2). It's exhausting just thinking about it.

Oddly, finding myself doing initial negotiations with a potential major partner for my organization. This is a weird place for me to be, and I'm looking forward to handing off the deal to the partnerships team, but for now I'm having the conversations. It's sort of fun, our two organizations seem to be perfectly aligned to work together but apparently nobody noticed this until now.

So we'll see what happens.

My car just failed to start to go for lunch, had to be jumped. I am hoping it is just the heat and not something serious. There were no lights on, but I don't have a battery gauge in the car, so i don't know if the battery is dead or what :/

"I need you to come to my desk and look at this SQL query, it's pissing me off."

* walk all the way across the building *

"Look, when I tell it to give me everyone who registered before June 31st it doesn't do anything."

"Tim, does June have 31 days?"

Yeah don't just send me a message or anything, this definitely needs me to stop what I'm doing and walk across the building. Happy to help.

Did y'all know Firefox has a bug which prevents it from printing more than one page? Did y'all also know that Firefox's response to this issue is to tell you to use Chrome?

And what I stumbled across when I was trying to find a GIF...

We have them 7 hours Monday-Thursday, 5 hours Friday, and 2 hours on Sunday. It's 105 contact hours spread across three weeks. So on week one, we covered half of an Intro to Java class and four weeks of a college-level Discrete Math class.

So most of my symptoms seem to have gone now. I only have 1 ulcer pill left. \o/ Though I do get heartburn when I think about going to my moms. I feel bad because I have dress rehearsal I gotta go to, but it's also her birthday. :(
