I need help working with the Steam API

Posted 23 May 2019 - 08:21 AM

I'm trying to make a desktop app that grabs Steam inventories (from public profiles of course) and sorts based on certain qualities of items found in the inventory. For example, if you wanted to search for profiles that have Karambits from CS:GO in their inventories. I've got two main problems, however. First of all, I have no idea how to actually request data from the Steam API. I tried to test what I saw online ( https://partner.stea...nventoryService ) in Postman, and I used the following config: http://prntscr.com/ns2rwf and got the results you can see at the bottom. I've tried rearranging the parameters and it gives the same response. I have no idea if I'm using the proper authentication key ( http://prntscr.com/ns2t2l ) or if I'm formatting the requests the right way. Basically, I have no idea if what I'm doing is completely wrong or if it's the Steam API that's being stupid, or how to fix this issue. Additionally, I would like to know if anybody knows a way to traverse all the Steam profiles for inventories with specific items in them like I mentioned earlier. There are already numerous Steam API-based websites that do this, but I have no idea how they do it. Honestly, the resources about this specific API are so scarce that I'm completely lost, and I've tried contacting many owners and staff of these Steam API websites, but none of them have gotten back to me. If anybody knows anything regarding these issues I would really appreciate the help!

First, have you gone through the steam api docs?

https://developer.va...i/Steam_Web_API
https://steamcommunity.com/dev
https://partner.stea...webapi_overview
https://steamwebapi.azurewebsites.net/
https://github.com/a...ode-steam-guide

Second - I don't believe there is an 'above board' way of searching all profile inventories.

Third, and this is just because I am a curious cat, why?

1. The fourth website is really great. It has some really helpful info. Still really stumped about the IInventory stuff though. :P
2. There has to be, or some script that does this, because websites like backpack.tf use this all the time (there is a paid premium service that does this).
3. Because I love TF2 and when I want a certain item I wanna be able to find out who's got it. I know there's a way to do this without using backpack.tf's premium services. I used to use a different website that has since shut down, and it was basically the same as backpack.tf in its usefulness.

I do appreciate the help though. I've asked SO MANY PEOPLE about this kinda thing and they've all been useless. If you know anyone else with knowledge of this kind of thing, please let me know!

Well.. I mean sure.. there's away to do it, but it is not above board and treads across the bright line of being 'legit'.

How do you search within the Steam API for profiles or inventories containing certain data? For example, if I wanted to search for all inventories with a certain item, how do I search the Steam profiles database for this? I know this is possible because sites like backpack.tf and others have this feature.

From what I understand that is not an option using the steam api.
