Thoughts on Elon Musk?

Posted 02 June 2019 - 05:51 PM

I can assume that most of you know about him and his work. But I am curious to hear what do you have to say about his work and the ideas that he has. I get that most of them are not his, like with the Hyperloop, which some people called it the biggest money burn from the down of mankind.
What I like is the Tesla but even that it is not generating much money than it should.
Oh yeah, I do like Paypal, that's for sure!

A little... ambitious.

The Muskbro following, however, is cancer.

i think he is doing a lot of good with his money. I mean it used to cost nasa millions to send a rocket into outer space and he can do it under 1 million.

tesla is great

there is just so much that can be accomplished and he has the means which he is using to his full advantage. -- wish other billionaires would follow in his footsteps but alas they would rather enrich themselves than help the planet

I would like to think that if most devs had his level of money that they would all be doing similar things. I know I would. If you don't have to worry about keeping a roof over your head and food on the table, most of us would certainly follow our passions more and be working on many interesting projects. So for that, I don't think he is all that interesting.

I think his social skills on the other hand suck really bad. He needs to work on learning to speak to media and when he is on stage. Having said that, I don't mind him being eccentric. The best inventors often are.

I also think he could probably work a bit smarter than harder. He is known for his work ethic and sleeping at his offices, but if he just chilled a bit more and reasoned out his ideas a bit better he could achieve even more. He is the type of guy who will probably die without leaving much written journals behind (yeah I am sure he has plans and schematics but nothing more personal discovery wise) which will be a loss to humanity for sure.

Oh and btw, paypal sucks hardcore. I learned this the hard way not too long ago. They almost always side with buyers and won't even protect digital products. Lame!

I think that it's refreshing to see someone wealthy do something with his money to try to help instead of just trying to grow the pile. He has a lot of bravado, but he has a lot of compassion also. I don't know if this has been posted here before, but it's an interview from a couple years ago when he was trying to solve Australia's power problems. The whole 14 minutes is good to watch, but I'm talking about the part that starts at 11:35:

She tells him how power is becoming a luxury in Australia and you can see he's actually surprised to learn how bad it's gotten, you can see that his goal is to help people. When she tells him that some people are deciding between electricity and food his response is "then we will work harder." He's genuinely compassionate and seems like he's really trying to help people with his various projects, which again is good to see in the wealthy. It would be great if people like Warren Buffet or Carlos Slim or Jeff Bezos decided that they wanted to do something like provide power to Africa or figure out how to remove plastic from the oceans.
