Java - Web frame works with open sockets.

Posted 08 July 2019 - 12:52 PM

Hello fellow coders,

Background.
I am currently mocking up some idea's for my final year project and have some ideas of what i want to do. I am currently on a placement year at the moment but i am wanting to get a bit of a head start, and get some research and rough idea's of what i want to do before hand. so my current idea is to create a rest API with a basic android app and then a basic web side front end. with some graphing or other element, to be honest i specifically know yet.

What I'm actually asking.
Currently the only web app technology I am familiar with and have used is JSF, but don't feel it would be appropriate so currently i am looking for a web framework that doesn't need to completely reload the page on an event happening but instead can update a component, add a table etc. I did also find Vaadin but would like to know what other options there are so that i can play with the different options.

So if someone can suggest some other technologies maybe even some good resources comparing them that would be amazing.

Thanks in advance
Jordan

Are you talking about something like AJAX? Client page calls the server side without a full refresh?

I actually forgot ajax existed, So yeah something similar to that but java side to save writing Ajax code and keeping code base for updating elements in one place. Maybe it won't be possible. But i don't see why it wouldn't be. IE:

a bad example but simple enough to quickly explain:

a thread that reloads items from a database every 10mins.
each connected client will then recieve an update to the table of that information on that update if there on the page showing that information. (think that makes sense)

Edit::

I've found this: https://netbeans.apa...quickstart.html maybe ajax is exactly what i'm looking for, and i'm thinking in the wrong way. wouldn't be the first time i've overlooked the obvious.

thanks
Jordan

It would be for the web facing side which i intend to be a java based web app:

So i'd have a rest API
A web front end (Java backend)
app

Where both the app and webapp will communicate with the rest API (i can work that part out) however my issue is coming from updating the web front end through the backend, i guess a better example would be if it was a live chat web app. the user would want the message added to a message list and not reload the whole page. and that's what i want to accomplish i guess using ajax request it would be possible however id like an automatic way through the java backend where if a message is added to the page bean it will auto update the message log. (i have no idea if this is a thing or not just going of a presupposition, but don't see why it couldn't be.)

thanks

Why go the long drawn out route of trying to make a java app website? Why not just bash some web code and be done with it?

Mainly for the learning curve of it, as it's going to be for a final year project, so it gives me more to write about. that and it won't be something as simple as loading and persiting data from a database,

thanks
