Browser based text game

Posted 14 July 2019 - 05:43 AM

Hi all,

I am looking for help with a project i have in mind. I am new to coding and would love to replicate something from my younger years. (Nostalgia is a wonderful holiday destination!)

I used to play a game called HitmenRPG/HitmanRPG (can't remember the exact spelling!) circa 2002/2003.

I know it was a browser based text game, with a few pictures (items to buy in store etc) and a cult following (approx 1500 - 2500 users). You could take on simple jobs (computer generated, low income, low risk etc), go after other players (hunt them down and try to kill them), train, buy items etc etc. From what i can remember, the graphics were pretty low (no animation) and there was no sound.

I would LOVE to replicate this in all it's glory!

I also remember emailing and speaking with the developer, who told me that they were a uni student, who made it in their spare time using C++ and MySQL.

I've signed up for a few courses on basic web development (HTML, Javascript, CSS, Bootstrap, Node.js etc) with my thinking being that i could recreate it using these skills.

I've come to the realization that this is something which isn't going to be as "simple" as a website!

What i am asking is, what language(s) do you experienced coders think i should be using?

I apologize if this is in the wrong section or if i sound like a total idiot!

(Also, i'm kind of hoping to find anyone who was signed up to the original game, possibly even the developer themselves!)

Thank you in advance for any and all help/info.

I would suggest you start writing down _ALL_ the functionality you want in the game, how the game operates, pages seen, user interaction, possible database tables, etc.. and organize what is priority and what is gold plating.. get a road map to a 'minimally viable product' down before you start.

Yes, you should be able to.

The only super complexity is the volume of 'activities in it. A lot of is just CRUD database work.

client side (html, css, js)
server side (ASP.NET, php, ruby, python, etc)

I would be correct in saying that although a very detailed guide, it does contain outdated code?
