Whats the best way to store user images on the client?

Posted 19 July 2019 - 02:13 AM

I was wondering how do facebook and instagram applications store user images on the client device. Are they saved in internal memory or are they cached for quick recovery. For example, when browsing down a feed, where are all the photos of a users friends/followers stored on the client device? If they are stored in internal memory wouldn't they take up too much space as internal memory is usually very small?

Please do not create duplicate topics. Merging.

I would imagine there is some local db and caching going on.

Wouldn't saving images to local database (SQLite) cause performance issues to the database?

Typically, yeah, but nothing super duper bad in the smallish size.

Would saving other user images in internal memory cause the app size to skyrocket.

Depends on how things are loaded. Assuming those aforementioned apps work per normal, the normal memory management cycle would kick in.. The app is active, it gets information via their APIs, that sits in memory until the app doesn't need it and is released, or the app is closed and released.

Examle of that life cycle drawn out:
