Just looking for some insight.... Python vs PHP

Posted 21 July 2019 - 11:04 AM

Afternoon you bunch of D.I.C.ers!

So, I want to swing at doing a browser based game. Nothing too elaborate but since I either have hit my head on a hard surface too often or have suddenly decideded to inflict pain on myself with this call. That being said!

I've looked at both a bit today in the tutorial section, neither one makes my head hurt.

I'm wondering about some insight from you all as to starting to learn with Python or Php?

Any pros or cons from your perspective?

Any other language you may want to suggest I look into?

Thanks for any help!

~ That old guy.

What sort of game? Elaborate on what the elements are.

Well that might help! [Let's go with the head vs hard surface from the previous post shall we?]

My first attempt is going to be fairly simple. My other half is Canadian and I'm always telling her that they feed American's to bears in the streets. It's a running gag we have a ton of fun with.

I'm planning a simple game where you play.. a bear. There will be a few powerups for lack of a better term. Things like the Yogi Manuever [get the picnic basket to fill your food meter], ways to take out tourists that provide extra experience, enlist squirrel minions to protect your lair, fairly simple fair.

You will be able to raid other players to steal food or other items. I may make it so you can attack them to do damage, but not kill them.

A rudimentary combat system so the tourists can fight back.

That is the gist of it. I know I'll come up with more, I'm doing the note work on it now.

That help at all?

Primarily text. Some graphics.

Think legend of the green dragon or tribal wars [much less graphics intense then TW since I can't draw stick figures]

Oh.. ok. Then either would be fine. Python, as a server side language isn't bad plus you can use that in non web programming. Web wise you would need things like Django, Flask, or Pyramid frameworks to assist.

PHP's been around a long time and there are a crazy number of tutorials for it. No framework needed and a little less hand holding.

Ultimately, it's which language you're most comfortable with. I'm not a huge fan of PHP, but I've written huge things in it and it can certainly do the job. Python is a nicer language, IMHO, but to do something webby you'll need an extra layer, as noted.

To a new programmer looking to do web stuff I recommend Javascript. Which is to say, you can't do a web app without understanding the foundational technologies of HTML/CSS and Javascript. Most modern sites are dead in the water without JS; the era of write your website so it degrades gracefully without JS seems to be over.

Since Javascript has become more integral, the server has mostly devolved into a Web API kind of thing, which can be done in any language that can barf out some JSON on a URL.
