What's your zoom?

Posted 04 August 2019 - 02:24 AM

So I don't know whether this is a factor of old age and rubbish eyesight, or high resolution monitors and minuscule default fonts.

Or that when 100% was defined, etch-a-sketch was still a high resolution device

But all my programming forums are zoomed to 150%.

How's everyone else doing.

Looks like 125% for this one. Don't know how consistent I am about it across other forums.

A little after 40 it was time to break down and get reading glasses. You can squint at the fuzzy monitor for but so long, and when you do it all day, ouch. Alas, reading glasses have a focal point far closer than a monitor should be to your face. Most so called "monitor glasses" still seem to follow the reading glasses model. I ultimately had an optometrist fix me up a pair of glasses with a focal point closer to normal monitor distance, beyond the length of my arm.

For my work monitors and home monitors, I'm running at 100%, but these monitors are 1080 or 768 pixels tall and are in the 22" to 27" inch ranges. The work laptop is also at 100% with 768 pixels tall and 13" size.

My newest personal laptop on the other hand is driving me a little batty. It's also 1080 pixels tall and 14" size. It's just small enough to force me to run with 125% zoom. The Lenovo and/or Windows recommendation is 150% zoom, but for me it's too large. So anyway with the 125% Windows zoom, I still have to tell Chrome to zoom in DIC to 125% as well because the Verdana font just doesn't quite look right if I leave it at Chrome's 100%.

(Yes, my doctor was recommending bi-focals, but I'm hard headed so I'm doing monovision right now. For near vision I only need about .75, and for distance only 1.00 to get to where things look perfect. As my optometrist said, if I was willing to live with things not looking perfect then I could go on without glasses or contacts for even longer. But I do like being able to see out to 100 yards and make out details, and I also like being able to see manufacturer marks on the brass so here I am doing monovision.)

So to answer your question: yes, it's high resolution monitors and minuscule default font sizes. The true issue though is that the default 12 pt. font size is based on the assumption of 80 or 96 DPI. When the dots get smaller, the fonts get smaller. If only 12 pt really meant 1/6", then there would be no issues. :)

Hmmm. Depends on the device. With resolution greater than 1080p my zoom is usually 150%. I've had to go to 200% once or twice. On ,1089p devices I like 125% or control it on an application level.

I have a pair of glasses specifically for screens as well as my bifocals. If I tilt the bifocals just right I can see. Sadly it's time to see the optometrist again because all three prescriptions are failing me.

I'm usually around 150. Old age is definitely catching up.

As you are concerned then, yes, visit the eye doctor.

Also consider, generally, the lighting, quality of screen, seating position and your level of tiredness or stress.

I am not medically certified ;)
