Build Android/iOS App for Sensor Data Collection

Posted 21 October 2019 - 07:04 AM

Hi, we're planning to develop a mobile app for Android and iOS.

Regarding our requirements below, what development framework do you suggest? Flutter, React Native, Xamarin, two native apps? Others?

Basic Idea

- Collect data from several sensors (which are connected to the phone via Bluetooth)
- Then send the data to an internet server
- Live graphs of the incoming data

App Requirements

  • Access to WiFi, Bluetooth and the inbuilt device sensors
  • App must (!) be able to run in the background without time restriction
  • Must be fast, since there's a lot of sensor data coming it
  • Secure internet connection, since the data is sensitive
  • Support for live graphs of the incoming data

Dev-Tool Requirements

  • Must run on Windows 10, macOS would be nice
  • Probably no budget available

Experiences with React Native

  • No good support for running in the background
  • Lots of duplication: Most code needed to be written natively, for the sensor connection modules

Thanks in advance!

Always a fan Xamarin for the bulk of the work can be done in one form and then cross compiled.

Do know users can limit what apps do in the background, and the three major mobile OSes have various way to 'tombstone' an app in the background. It sounds like you are planning to not handle that case, but you darn well better.
