What's my best budget option to create a website with forum?

Posted 09 January 2020 - 12:44 AM

I want to build a website that would be mainly consisted of 2 pages: first, a main page with news, shown as images with text, and second, a forum of that news site. I'm a beginner on a budget: what's my easiest and cheapest way to make it up and running? Is it Wix? Is it some hosting service like HostGator + phpBB? but then what would be the best way to build the news page itself? I do have some basic web development knowledge, but I wonder if there's a way to combine the ease of drag and drop of Wix with the popular phpBB platform? Thanks

WordPress is quite complicated, and does it have good forum plugin? I can give it a try, but I remember WordPress was messy to work with.. Mand if I do use WordPress, where do I connect a domain and ssl and hosting?

Well, this is a developer forum. Wix isn't a term that is used here often, if ever.

You can use WordPress on any number of hosting platforms, especially the major ones like GoDaddy, BlueHost, HostGator... pretty much anything other than site builders like Wix.

If you are wanting to use something like phpBB, you can do so outside of WordPress. HostGator can easily handle WordPress for your site, & phpBB for your forums.

Thanks. I am a beginner and I'd like you to direct me a bit more. Assuming I go for your suggestion: To build the website on WordPress, and the forum with phpBB, how do I combine these two? I want the forum and website to be linked togehter in a fixed navbar so that you can easily switch between the forum and the website. Is it possible when combining these two?

As per the phpBB forums, there is a plugin for a phpBB/Wordpress Bridge.

I do not have experience with phpBB myself, so I would suggest possibly looking for solutions/suggestions on their forums.

Yep, this is a very crowded space, lots of options to choose from. I suggest you try stuff, and see what seems to work best for you.
Since you haven't committed to one option yet, you might want to pick the interesting candidates and set up toy forums to play with. Maybe invite your friends to check them out, and see what folks prefer, before you start drawing for-real traffic.

Thank you guys. I've actually found a nice wp forum plugin called wpForo. So far it seems nice, but I have a few concerns: for now it's ok, but maybe there are some major flaws that I might not have encountered yet and it might ruin everything in the future? Some must-have features etc..?

Two more things: is it a good idea to do a blog+forum in the same site? Or I should separate them for speed concerns? I can imagine that if the traffic grows a bit, it might "overload" the website. But with WordPress+wpForo plugin you can't separate the two.

Lastly, how is DreamHost for my testing purposes? localhost for wp is quite limited (I can't send users forum email verification upon registration for example, or there's a workaround to make it work?)

Thanks
