Software development newbie

Posted 26 February 2020 - 02:09 AM

Hi everyone, I'm new to this to please bear with me...
I have recently joined a software development company, as a sales and project executive, but I have no idea what I'm doing... They expect me to go out there and sell our product and I want to! Very much so, however, I'm not sure how...
Does anyone have any tips on how to approach potential new customers? Thanks!

They hired you as an exec, want you out knocked on doors, and you are not sure how to sell things?

I would think it's just in the abstraction. Be it a pencil, a hamburger, or some app.

Presumably you have relevant experience or skills that makes you suitable for the job? There must be some reason why they hired you. They didn't just grab you randomly from the street..?

Depends, obviously, on the product, its intended audience, and where this audience is to be found lurking.

Thanks for your reply... I have experience in sales, yes. But not in Software Dev. That was the question. I used to sell utilities, tariffs, etc. So this industry is quite new to me. Yes, they hired me as an exec, but they're also a small company, it's only us 3. I'm just doing some research on how to be successful in this type of product. No harm in utilizing all search engines...

Well, you could follow the Oracle model: Show basic demo. Promise the moon in terms of integration and support. Get customer to sign on the dotted line. Deliver software and encourage them to install everywhere even if it goes over the license count. Provide mediocre support. Then send in the lawyers to audit the installs.
