Am I so unskilled? I newbie questions himself

Posted 26 February 2020 - 07:00 AM

Hi everybody, I hope to don't be off topic here.
This is not a "code" question, but is more like a "existential" one.

I'm a newbie and since 4 months I'm learning JS and React/ReactNative.

I don't think I'm skilled for this cause somethings many times are not clear at all, and his can be.
I'm following tutorials and replying them a few times, improving and so on. Always by myself.

Lately I thought I got more, but for example today I needed to make a MongoDB server with React and following a tutorial that I did 3 times (and I develop an APP on my own) not even 2 months ago, 90% of the things looked unknown.
This is just an example to say that many times I feel completely lost.

The question is:
- excluding some phenomenons of coding, is it normal?
- or do have I to be already more "advanced"
- maybe wrong classes?

Has someone experience about that?
I mean how long did you take to become "independent"

I know that developing is a incredibly wide field and I don't demand to be a developer in 2 months, but I'm asking cause I don't know anybody so I have no idea and as I said I feel lost.

Thanks in advance for your answers

You're a few months into it, and not knowing your study path that could leave a lot of gaps.

For the most part just doing projects helps quite a bit. Doing some planning before you do projects helps too. Get an idea what you want to accomplish, the areas of importance, user interaction, storage needs, etc then using that as a road map.

If you projects are too ambitious then dial them back. Break them down into chunks, and get familiar with solving smaller issues first then connecting them to larger ones.

Hi modi123_1!
Thanks for the answer!

I'm not making any big project mine are just the tutorial with maybe more options, something easy.

Maybe yes my studies are the problem, that's why I decide to start from the scratch and learn JS and then get into React.

Perhaps snag a book on JS, work through it, and build a foundation on that to attempt tutorials and fractured other learning avenues.

Software development is a field that is both insanely broad and insanely deep. Web development itself is a skillset that receives surprisingly little benefit (aside from general know-how) from the rest of an individual's coding experience: the tools just have totally different use cases.

So it's normal to feel overwhelmed. Start small, do projects, and be curious. It's not magic.

Pop on amazon, throw in 'java script', and sort by most recent. Find some that are well reviewed, compare reviews, compare indexes (to see topics covered), and snag one. There's rarely one solitary source.

Everything worth doing is worth. Keep learning and doing the work. You might want to join masterminds and also expand your knowledge through new courses. Look for Facebook groups or just communities in your local area - people who are already skilled developers and can set you up on the right path.
