General API's : A beginner's discussion

Posted 09 March 2020 - 07:07 AM

I am researching how on an app we can provide API's which are general in nature that many different entities can use them and solve all there purposes with any specific requirement.

To this end, I am aware there is quite a lot of such API's available, imagining them to be at different levels. And that is where this idea must have formed from - subconscious observation.

If you could reveal and categorise in some manner the general API's already made and available.

One such tagging could be Very Very General, Very General, Not very but General, Not General but ahum ahum, look at this one too. I don't want to restrict tagging to one dimension. So please don't.

Another outcome of this would be mapping what are the costs associated with such API's and Why are some of these existing and Which areas seemingly have not been explored, produced, monetized.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

What have you looked into and found out?

I am not seeing the functional use of people being crowdsourced to trying to enumerate every api ever written.

I have seen n dabbled into the general coding environment from a very non-tech understanding. Yet recently I made some API's in python,Django.

So my aim for this is a very beginner friendly discussion. As you know even the term API is so new to general population and only that has thousands of videos explaining it.

I am a thinker that says Linux is an API, Android is an API and facebook has an API.

As only two of us are discussing today, give me a chance to put things into your definitions.

I understand too, Alexa has an API and have read and understood it.

Now,
further API is or sustained by some protocol, here we enter into networking. I have vivid memory of its very basics.
So a branch of conversation can happen here too, if someone wishes .

But conversation is and does flow organically, and I just want you to post something which is plausibly relevant for others + interesting enough for you to wait for answers.

That really made no sense, or seemed to even remotely be responsive, but cool. You do what ever you are doing.

That, on face, is not true unless you fuzz the terms out to look at them from oribit.

What type of API are you wanting to discuss? There are different types, Java has an API that developers use to write code. A web service has API's that do specific things. One of those is already general in nature, because it is calling libraries that are in Java, the other is not so general because it is meant for a specific system to do a specific thing and likely needs approval for usage.

So, yes, I read the definition of Java API on google.I too agree with you.

But in my mind, approval is a addon, feature, dangler of sorts.

So we have here distinguished here -
1. General in nature - Java API
2. Not so general - Webservices API

I'll wait for more content before adding mine.

Why not add that information now? Cast a bigger net for discussion.

If I must:

I am very newbie on these topics, but these are few things which might matter here, and more general:

  • Sensing how data has to be preserved, shared, open, easy, n safe. To make sense of the volume of the data India or the World generate, and how to tolerably create a new earth.

  • Mathematics and its journey. Living without calculations. The life you want. Loving without boundaries. The notion of growth. Forests for the trees. What is creativity? What is AI? How to persuade atoms?

  • Magic of Quantum Mechanics. This world. Your world. Our world. Lost in space. 1000 suns. Ages. Practical realities.

I again say I am an aware newbie, lm, not an expert on anything, like to see everything from marketing perspective, flame me but
don't flame me

I have no idea what any of that has to do with programming or API's in general...

To take a path,

A general API could sense the type of data, and decide what to do with it.
Such an API can be put in front of every company's data, and structure it even before storing....

Hoping for other's paths and content

Do you want a do-everything-API?

You are speaking in extremely generic terms, in a world where data is currency. I don't think you know where you want this to go and because of that, I don't know where I can help. I initially thought you were pushing towards something like OData or GraphQL, but then you went on what I can only describe and strung together words that make no sense in any technical sense. Now it seems we are to a point where data should be freely available? To what avail or purpose?

@astone - 'cuz data wants to be free, and mathematics are is an artificial construct laid down to limit the mind, world, and soul.

i am not sure why you want to use an api..

ive worked in some relatively large companies (5000 + employees) and almost all of them never used an api for anything

Interesting... This may need to go offline, because most of my dealings have been API driven. Either integrations or SoC and most of those are systems I've either designed or assisted in the design.
