How much would it cost to host a mobile app?

Posted 12 March 2020 - 05:50 PM

I want to build a mobile app that relies on web infrastructure such as storage, rest api, authentication, etc. I have researched on this myself but there is nothing that is extremely clear and to the point.
I know that you need to pay for storage, but that you also need other services. I could probably spend time researching more. But I thought, why not ask somebody here who knows first hand about my problem. So what can I expect to pay for such an app?
What business models would be best to help support the expenses of hosting. Should I offer a subscription? Do you know how tinder supported itself in the early days?

Relevant details of app:

Going to be a dating site.
Strong emphasis on ability to upload and view images (like Tinder)
Will use REST api for data access

Thanks for reading and I hope you can help.

I would think some sort of cloud based system like Azure or AWS would be sufficient and flexible. Regular webhosting may do the trick as well, but has the occasional issue scaling.

As for your business model that's a whole different can of beans. You may want ot look into folk analyzing their business model.

Also take a look at Firebase.

That's the one I just researched. Will probably test that first.

Take a look at Amazon AWS. They have a pay-on-the-go scheme. Meaning that when your app doesn't use a lot of their recourses you pay a less. As soon as your app starts to get more users and the use of required recourses increases, the amount you pay increases as well.

That way your expenses scale nicely with the growth of your app.

They even have a calculator on their site to estimate the cost.
