How GitHub Became Popular?

Posted 07 April 2020 - 03:23 PM

Does anybody know how GitHub became popular in the first place? I don't think they have a fantastic marketing tho. As I'm looking at their content right now, they are just that big software giant that doesn't care about marketing or whatsoever.

git is a cli, they gave it a web-interface & saved developers the time of setting up their own git server.

Ye, in terms of marketing - I also read somewhere that Sid (the CEO at GitLab) created a post on HackerNews that went viral and that's how they got a lot of initial sign ups for their beta.

Yes, it's likely that they told people that their product exists. That's not an unusual step. But really, they were early into that market and they managed to stick the landing, so people went with them. Later arrivals like bitbucket didn't really get traction, though gitlabs got some traction after Microsoft bought github and some users felt this put github's business model at risk. So far, those fears have not played out, as it happens.
