Seems like a reasonably well reviewed book set that covers a broad range.

HTML and CSS are not super high changing options. It covers HTML5 so that's a positive, and looks to give you a solid groundwork to get your feet under you.

I can't find the table of contents so it's hard to judge, but after reading the comments I would advise against buying this book. They say that media queries were not mentioned in the book, that HTML5 wasn't even fully fledged at the time of writing the book, that one of the books was actually edited in 2011 and not the 2014, that it's not clear whether it's a reference book with illustration or a tutorial, etc.

Most of us didn't learn HTML and CSS newer features in a book, so it's not that important to have an up to date book (for HTML/CSS), but it's super important that it teaches good practices, especially accessibility, so it should not be a reference book or a "pragmatic" intro to web development, because you can find that everywhere on the Internet.

No, I never bought them but from the reviews, and index, I could see a reality where I didn't know any CSS/HTML I would.

Are there other books that cover those topics in different light, detail, or focus? Most assuredly. You'll need to weigh out reviews and content to your liking.

I don't like to read programming books unless they have a narrow topic. Online sources are more up to date and more diverse. Learning from different sources allows to compare the explanations, switch to a different source when the pace or the quality is not adapted for you, etc. But that's a personal opinion.

HTML is not a difficult language to learn. It's a markup language, you learn it fast but sadly most learning materials I see don't cover accessibility so I see no added value over an online course. As for CSS, it's more a question of paradigm (mobile-first, progressive enhancement, etc.) so if you learn from an old book, it's going to teach you CSS well but you will use it "wrong". And since you don't know what you don't know, it's not that easy to go find the missing information.

Two free solutions I know could be MDN and Kahn Academy but I have no idea how good they are. MDN is a great reference but do they write good tutorials?

This one seems better than the one you found for CSS, but it's still not really up to date and I would personally not like to read it.

Whatever you do, maybe read this book while learning Inclusive Design Patterns
