What happened to that great site?

Posted 30 January 2008 - 09:10 PM

Ever bookmark a page that you found totally killer and a great resource, only to come back days, weeks or months later and found that it has been taken down, changed, or otherwise rendered unusable?

I had a great site which listed a bunch of free ebooks that had everything from mastering programming languages to algorithm analysis to self help manuals on a dozen non computing topics. It was recently changed this month to a lame blog that includes nothing but advertisements and a little nonsense text talking about non computer related stuff.

Tell us about the site and what it use to be and what it is now.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

bestbuysux.org & liksang.com

One was a hate site for ... well that's obvious & the other was a site for Asian video game equipment, controllers, systems...

Yahoo auctions. I used to make cash by exploiting the differences between the average prices on Yahoo and eBay...then yahoo auctions shut down and that was that.

Wow... I didn't know that Yahoo auctions closed. I signed up for an account but they shutdown just about every auction that I put up, so I quit trying after a while.

lithuaniandonkeylove.com - it used to be chock full of tips and tricks for mating and caring for Lithuanian donkeys, especially helpful in my previous career of running a Lithuanian donkey stable.

I don't even want to tell you what it is now, ;)

I was also going to say liksang.com (screw you, Sony)

Home-run message boards for Gameboy Advance some friends and I started: gbamerican.com

Random pre-2000 freebie sites that sent amazing freebies. I got a ton of amazon gift certificates for nothing but a few clicks and etc. (this was pre-enron internetz when everyone thought it'd be a good idea to give everything away free...)

ALSO! mp3.com back in the day. I know they are still around, but they suck...

That seems to happen a lot these days. Everyone thinks that by throwing more onto the site will make it that much better! Sometimes less is more. Don't bloat your sites or your software. That is a standard rule.

:)

I'm talking about the U.K. branch that shut a few years back. I don't know if it carried on elsewhere in the world.
