Office chair recommendations

Post icon  Posted 03 July 2021 - 10:23 PM

Hi all,

So one of the castors on my chair got snapped off in a roll through a carpet rut.
Which is kinda what happens when plastic is used in place of metal in potentially high mechanical stress situations.

It's on it's second (possibly third) gas lift cylinder (those things seem to have a reliability problem all of their own).
Not to mention the arm rests are getting tatty.
Oh, and to top it off, it affects the circulation in my lower legs/feet.

With all that, I'm looking for a good office chair from a UK supplier.
As the title says, suggestions of where to go (or where to avoid) would be useful.

Cheers.

If price is no object, the original Herman-Miller Aeron chair. Try to find these in stores that specialize in offices being shutdown or being relocated. I got mine in 2000 from a .COM bust for half the price of a retail chair, it's still going strong now. The downside of buying from a closeout store is sizes maybe limited -- Aeron come in 3 sizes: small, medium, and large. They are denoted by the number of bumps you can feel under the lip of the top back rest.

I got a chance to try out an Mirra 2 chair as well. Very nice, and the price points are much better compared to the original Aeron.

And here's a relatively timely review that coincides with your quest:
Herman Miller Aeron Review

It also compares 4 other chairs midway through the review so that should expand your search...

I personally love the Steelcase Leap, but it is also not cheap. I have been rocking my current one for around 7 years now.

This maybe sacrilege, but I'll mention it as well. Don't completely dismiss some of those cheaper conference room chairs with the 4 wheels, fixed seating height, and fixed arms. When we used to go to the office, a lot of my co-workers would leave their office chair in the conference room, and take a conference room chair as their office chair.

When this pandemic started and people were starting to work from home, my wife bought a conference room style chair instead of what we would typically choose as an office chair. For her, it was a matter of hating the star shaped caster arrangement under the chair, and she didn't really want or need any tilt adjustments. She was just gambling that chair height would be correct. At worse, she would just put some foot pads under her table if chair was too high. She's been quite happy with the chair for about 15 months, and only recently shifted over to a motorized standing desk/workbench we found in Home Depot.

I bought the Herman Miller Embody chair late last year. It's really expensive for a chair, but the fact that I'm 100% remote now means that my home office chair is on level with my bed in terms of personal investment.

There are certainly some things they could have done better, which is a bit frustrating at that price point, but I absolutely do not regret the purchase. It has improved my "sitting stamina" tremendously, and has actually helped me work on my overall posture because it reinforces good body positioning while I'm seated.
