Where's my chess nerds at?

Posted 17 December 2021 - 09:59 AM

Been a while. 'Ello.

I feel like we must have some chess nerds around here... I got into it last year when I started working for a chess company. Anyone for some games? Maybe a DIC tournament?

Apparently uploading no longer works here?

Working for a chess company? Like whittling pieces from ivory and such?

I was playing some 'simple chess' on Steam against the AI, but really never got too far into it.

Oddly, I was watching some world chess tournament on NBCSports channel late at night. Mildly interesting, but man there are some theatrics from those top players. (or at least the announcers made it sound like)

lol nope, still coding. I dev for a site that has courses where people can learn about the game by playing out specific lines and memorising them.

Well, I say coding... I spend more time looking at Jira and delegating than actually writing code these days, but y'know.

Ah cool.

Sounds like typical Jira.

I am a pretty limited chess player - I enjoy working problems or playing a casual game, but I'm pretty easily outmatched. I think I can usually do reasonably well against another naive player, but I'm always going to lose against someone who's actually taken the time to study the game in any sort of depth. (ie, studied some openings and endgames and so forth)

And I'm okay with that.

We switched over to Basecamp, which means that I now fondly reminisce about Jira.

HAHAHAHA! We started with basecamp, then to 'versionone', and now doing the Jira jingle.

I'm just a casual chess player. I taught my son and daughter the basic chess moves about 2 years ago. I'm now starting to get beat by my 7-year-old son unless I actively engage in the game and strike early to get pieces.

I coded a chess game one time. Does that count? I am not really a player though.

There's a lot of fun chess coding exercises! Especially with knight moves. Those are awkward AF
