Also take a look at the website https://web.dev. It's a site supported by Google and analyses your site for speed, SEO-optimization, mobile-friendliness,...
A good score on that page will get you in good favor with Google.
Apart from that, structure the content and text of your page well. Use tags like <h1>, <strong>,... to emphasize what your page is about.
Things like Meta-keywords etc. are not really used anymore by Google to rank your site. However, a good meta-description is still necessary.
Take a look at JSON-LD as well.
...
There are thousands of things you can do to optimize your SEO. There are books written about SEO containing more than 300 pages, little bit too much info to put in an answer here. Reading a up-to-date book about SEO will help you further and give you the tips and insight you need.

Getting a website 100% search engine friendly is a lot of research and work. Which is why people generally just out-source the work to SEO firms.
But if you are going to do it yourself, I'd go with a few cigars, a few bottles of brandy to get you through it, and Nescafé for those long nights...
Seriously, reach out to a firm and let them handle all that, because its also countless developer hours too with tag building, url handling and rewriting, competitor uri likeness to compare too, and title/keyword keyword uniqueness etc and that's just the start... A lot of what I mentioned can be done with Google Search Console. SEO is and should be considered part of your development process. There are charlatans who will tell you that it can be setup in just a few days. Anyone who tells you that isn't doing it correctly, or spending enough time on it to make your website rank anywhere near the top. Another overlooked factor also depends on how saturated your market is which you are targeting.

In addition to all the great ideas mentioned here, one thing I encourage you to remember is that Google (and all search engines really) are constantly adjusting their algorithms to keep mixing. You may have a site that is very SEO friendly one day and meet all of Google's requirements and the next day you may be on Page 2 for keywords you were on page 1 for the day before. Don't let rankings sway your strategy. Write good content, write for your target audience, make use of good keywords that your target audience would search for and follow the advice already mentioned and you will be fine.
Too many people waste time trying to tweak everything to stay in a search engine's good graces, but it is like trying to get approval from a parent that will just never give it to you. They also waste a ton of money on outsourcing the job on a constant basis. It is fine to pay for an SEO company at first, but to have them stick around on payroll for a long time at a high price is just throwing money away. Have them get you started on the right path and show you how to maintain what they setup. I have seen companies just poor tens of thousands of dollars to firms that really don't do much more than tweak a few keywords every few weeks.

I can't stress the above advice enough for people getting wrapped up with SEO firms. A friend of mine runs one of the biggest SEO firms in Miami. This was his number one piece of advice when I was sourcing SEO instructions to give SEO firms that I reached out too on behalf of a customer.
He said; SEO firms will always offer to help you build your system where they always control what keywords, tags, and attributes get used on your pages content when you create new pages on your website. They want to do this manually. Don't settle for this option, as it may bankrupt you.
If you have the money to spare... request they tap search engines API(s), and check the trending words for your marketspace, and have them words plucked from their system to be used when you create new content on your website or subsequently check your new articles keywords against search engines trending keywords to see if they are existing in your newly created pages, and if they are not, add them as anchor tags. It really does help, but this is a costly option, but you will save thousands in the long run as expressed above.
Remember, SEO companies see us as their cows, and they will milk us until we run dry. That's just the nature of how the SEO industry makes its money.
