I've never had trouble reinstalling Windows XP Pro on my laptop. I've done done it several times now, and it's never locked down for me. If you're reinstalling off the disks that came with your computer, then you should be fine. If you're trying to reinstall off of a commercial CD, then you might have trouble.

The question is... Why did you have to re-install it so many times???

lol! :P

I do reinstalls every 3 to 6 months just on principle. That, and after a while, I inevitably have done something to it that I would rather just reinstall.

A mother on a forum asked about installing XP on another computer in her home. She had XP installed on one computer already, and I suppose it was pre-installed when she purchased it. I assume she had her own install disc. A mod at the forum told her to go out and purchase an entirely new version of XP, because apparently it is illegal to install it on another computer. I realize you only receive one license key, but is this not overkill? This woman has children... and I think the money would be better spent elsewhere. Why prohibit installing your OS on multiple computers if it is merely for personal use? Do people seriously buy repeat copies of an OS like this? I know schools have to, but households...?

Wow... here is the pulse...
Read the MS agreement sometime, you pay for one (lets say it together "ONE" that's right, you've got it!) copy when you buy a pc. regardless if it's pre-installed or not. When a business has multiple copies, it's usually because they buy seat license. You pay for using Microsofts software, that is why they are in business. If you can't afford to pay for an operating system, cuz you've got kids or whatever, then don't buy computers, or learn how to install an operating system that doesn't charge it's users. If you can't afford a speeding ticket, then drive the speed limit. It's really as simple as that.

If you buy a new car, you need to pay for a new registration. It's the same thing.

And that's usually involved in the cost of a new car. Just like the OS is involved in the cost of a new computer.
