I have fedora running under virtual pc on my computer and too be honest i dont really like it that much. Everything is way to overely complicated and some stuff doesnt even work. Also installing is horrible. Thats the only linux distribution ive used, so sorry if im not too much help.

Try something else. Most people have to try a couple distros before they find the one they like.

Ye i would have, only problem is i have dialup and now the file sizes of these linux distributions have gone up to around 500 mb and etc. So, it doesnt seem to logical to spend afew days downloading something i might not even like, but once i get high speed ill be sure to try out a few more, before forever shunning linux.

I've been using Linux for more than 4 years, and I can't ever remember a distro being less than the size of a full CD or more. When I was on dial-up, I used a download manager, and then I could keep downloading after my Internet inevitably bit me in the behind.

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro. ALSA says that Creative isn't giving datasheets so they can't write one. The driver on the creative site does not compile on gcc version 4 and above.
I'll be checking out other distributions on VirtualBox later.

Well, it might be that the kernel headers have changed since Creative released the drivers.

So? Kernel headers changing has absolutely nothing to do with whether it'll compile under GCC4 or not.

It might. If the sound card driver is designed to work with, say, the 2.6.20 kernel, and Louisda16th has the 2.6.23 kernel. Since all kernel modules have to compile against the kernel headers, if something changed that the creative driver needs to work, it would give him an error. i had the same problem when trying to compile the rt61 kernel module for the airlink101 wireless card I have. The source code wasn't for the same kernel version that I was running, and gave me all sorts of errors.

That's not a GCC problem. That's a kernel header problem. It specifically says on the Creative website that the drivers will not compile under GCC4. Also, try the built in rt61 driver in 2.6.24, it's tasty.

Currently, I am running 2 computers with MEPIS 6.5, 1 with Debian, and 2 servers; 1 with XP Pro, the other with Red Hat. I am thinking of replaceing the Debian one with a new dist. I am thinking either Win XP or Mandrake.

Considering that the stable repos for etch are giving out linux kernel 2.6.18, I'd say he's switching from debian so that he can get up-to-date packages.

I'm assuming that's the kernel version. It's the header version they've got on the repos anyway.

Try running Windows under Virtual PC and you'll say the same thing. :D

If you want to try Linux, try Linux. Just know that it's going to be different. Some people can't tell the difference between not liking something because it's "bad", and not liking something because it's just not what they're used to.

I run Debian Etch on all of my machines, but I realize Debian isn't for everyone. If you're new to Linux, try Ubuntu, OpenSuse, Fedora, or Sabayon. Hell, you might not like any of them. That doesn't mean you don't like Linux, it just means you haven't found one that worked for you yet. There are A LOT of distributions out there waiting to be tried. You're bound to like one of them. :^:

For anyone who has hardware problems with Linux, I'm sorry. If it's a desktop machine and you can replace the hardware easily, do it. If you're running a laptop (or the hardware in question is really expensive or has no replacement) then try Linux again in a year or so. More and more hardware support is added to the kernel with every release.

---------

On a side note, I find my self laughing my head off when someone says that Linux is too complicated, and then goes back to "Well, I need to do my yearly reinstall of Windows now". The only time I've ever had to reinstall Debian on one of my machines was when the hard drive died. That was back when Sarge was stable. Had no problem upgrading all of the machines to Etch, and I'll (hopefully) have no problem doing the same thing when Lenny goes stable.

To sum all of that up, DIFFERENT != COMPLICATED. :)

I've got a system running Linux Mint kicking around - it's a nice, easy-to-use fork of Ubuntu.

I am using an older version of Debian, and I am just not a fan of Debian or Ubuntu. I want to try another distribution like mandrake or fedora, the debian computer is the one I just use for whatever I need it for, and I want to upgrade the O.S. :)

Oh, wiat that's right I want the install Vista on that one :) !

What don't you like about it? And why don't you dist-upgrade to etch or lenny?

No.. For GWatt's wireless card. For you, I'd say send an email to Creative.

Well, if #include<wmx010>'s youtube vidios about the new Ubuntu are true, I might want to look into that! The reason I don't really like the Debian and Ubuntu distro's is probably because I have older versions, I think I'll have to download and try the newest Ubuntu version! B)
