ok, so ive talked to gneato about this, but were still not really sure what's up and why this is happening, but lets start at the beginning.


about 2 weeks ago, i reinstalled windows xp. wiping the entire 60 gig to start from scratch. that included linux. before it was just a c:\ drive and an ext2 partition. but this i figured, so i dont have to backup all my documents again, i would partition a c:\, d:\ and an ext2, so i could store documents, music, etc on the d:\ drive. so i go thru all this, and partition my drives and everything, now it comes time to reinstall red hat again. it gets to disc 3, and fails on post install configuatrion.

i try again get the same error, figure it might be the cd's, so i make new cd's from the iso's. but i get the same errors. ive tried all different package combinations but i get the same error everytime. it just sort of freezes at post install configuration. ive tried with the linux partition unformatted, and preformatted in ext2. and still the same thing.

gneato thought it might be the boot loader, but i tried installing without a boot loader and still nothing. im pretty lost on where to go with this.

btw, when its freezing the hard drive light and and cd drive light turn off, it doesnt look like its searching or writing anything at that point.

Ah ha... Linux has to be within the first 30 gigs of the hard drive...

you gotta be shittin me. i dont think it was last time either. it was a 50 gig c partition, and then the 7 gig linux partition, c was first.

and now, it wont let me into partition magic.

same with fdisk.

So what is it that you did to get that error. What did you change, or is this all of the sudden?

well, like sam said, the linux partition should be in the first 30 gigs. so moved it in front of the d drive partition. still in the extended section. i then tried to install linux, of course it failed again. so i went into partition magic to move it around and delete whatever was installed. and then i started to get that error.

So you moved the partition with out re-assigning drive letters?

well linux never had a drive letter. all i did was switch the position of the linux and d partition. i can still get into the d drive partition and everything. just get that error with partition magic.

Partition magic f'd up one of my critical drives once... I want ever use it again.

Partition Magic sucks the hard back-left cow tit.

erm, you might try making a bootdisk (the software come bundled with PM) and boot up to that and run PM from outside of windows, does the xp disk management tool work? It might be conflicting with the partition magic configurations!

fixed it, guess it was a problem with the d drive or something, not a clue, but im running linux so im happy
