What do you think of Windows Vista?

My opinion: I hate it!

Actually my beef with alsa might have just been the computer I was using at the time. Every time I moved the mouse, I could hear an increase in hiss coming through the speakers. That could very easily have been hardware.

I think there was a VIA chipset 'feature' that caused this.

The computer I was using had an intel ICH something. I can't remember the motherboard make&model.

xorg. . .
It uses rasters as the fundamental unit. If it used vectors, as now any graphics card supports them, xorg would be much more efficient. When you use vectors, resizing windows, or text becomes much easier. Using rasters and trying to perform resize, operations becomes an exercise in masochism. Imagine trying to display a rotating cube. Since rectangles are always displayed as horizontal and vertical lines, you would have to use many tiny rectangles to generate a diagonal line, whereas a line can be along any diagonal. Now X hides this from developers so they can work with lines, so that from a development standpoint nothing would really change if X would switch to vectors as the fundamental unit. Performance and memory would increase dramatically.

Also, this is maybe just me, but I don't think that for running a desktop machine, you need to have the Xorg server and the Xorg client connect to each other over the loopback interace. That's right, the Xorg client goes to 127.0.0.1 and gets it's data from the Xorg server that way. You'd think if they were on the same machine, they could communicate through different means than lo.

Network transparency is one of the strong points of the Unix design philosophy.

If you really think there's a problem then write some patches. If you know enough about Xorg to be able to say there's a problem with it, then you certainly know enough to fix it. Otherwise show some proof or quit spouting dribble. Anyone can read a manpage and come up with some inane argument to prove their point. :^:

I have had the same problem with the sound card and the mouse, but it happened in pretty much any OS I ran. It's likely a hardware problem but I couldn't say for sure.

OK, tom9729, I'm downloading the source code for Xorg. It's over 300MB of bzipped and gzipped tarballs. I'm not sure what that translates to exactly, but it's about a gigabyte.

[edit]
And btw, saying that me being able to recognize problems equates to me having enough knowledge to fix a problem is not necessarily true. If NASA called you up and said, "Hey, we want to build a spaceship powered by hamsters on exercise wheels," you would know that was completely wrong, but wouldn't necessarily know how to fix it.

[edit]
make that between 1 and 3 gigabytes.

Yes, Xorg is very very big.

I've been sick at home for a couple days, sorry if I've been a little cranky. :)

Now that's funny, because I've just been asked by ESA to build a satellite using ion propulsion powered by mice on hamster wheels...

I got a HP laptop for school that came preloaded with Vista Home Premium and was dreading it, but after you turn off that annoying allow pop up usless piece of programming it isn't as bad as I thought.

I'm still going to be dual booting Linux on it soon, but I will use the Vista

Did you tell them that might be slightly less reliable than normal rocket fuel?

Grr still struggling with the choice of Vista on Lappy with Dual boot, or Dell Made Ubuntu Lappy.

I only need windows to play a few of the newer games on it, everything else will be handled via Linux.

Decisions, Decisions. I have to decide by tomorrow.

do try for AMD Turion fitted lappi. Will cost less which you can put in better graphics card/RAM.

The annoying popup is one of the better features.

On Ubuntu, whenever a program needs to do something on the admin level, it requires me to enter my password each time.
