Thank for the english lesson. I'm from the country so I use yall a lot instead of you all. Oh a lot was at one point one word instead of 2, like it is now.

Nope. Sorry.

"A lot" has always been two words.

Here's a clear example:
"I give you a lot of money".

In this case, "lot" means "large quantity". We always say "a large quantity" not "alarge quantity".

An ambiguous example:
"I gave you a lot of land"

Could either mean "I gave you a piece of land"
OR "I gave you a large quantity of land"

And another clear example:
"I have a large lot of land"
which means "I have a large piece of land"

There is a similar word, which is based on the last meaning. This word is "allot". Which means to "give a piece of" something.

E.g. "I will allot you some land" == "I will give you a piece of some land."

Hope that clears things up.

There is no such phrase as "alot"
there is only "a lot" and "allot" which have entirely different meanings.

I hope you learnt something today.

Oh, and "Alot" is also the name of a town in India.

I'm sorry for this now. I am in the US, so how can you tell me I am wrong.

I don't think it has anything to do with what country anybody comes from.

The pure and simple truth is that I have a far greater command of the English language than you, and it does not matter from where I come, or which country you happen to inhabit.

OR

Are you simply implying that people from the United States are always correct because they are superior to the alternate races that inhabit distinctly different areas on the face of the Earth?

You should realise that the informal English you use in your part of the United States is completely different from informal English used in other parts of the United States, and indeed the world. Plus, you are missing one important factor, which is that English originated in England (hence the name of the language), and not the United States.

If you want people from other parts of the U.S., and indeed, other parts of the world, to understand you, then you should revert to a more common style of English, otherwise known as standard English.

Did it really almost double my post count? That's nice...

But now I've got too many posts in the caffeine lounge. I may have to shut up around here for a bit.
