Thank You.. What does it mean to you?

Posted 14 February 2008 - 12:30 AM

In my times at this board I have received a lot of thank you's from developers alike, through both my snippets and helping others with their questions (mostly in the VB.NET section, but with some guest appearances in the C#, ASP.NET and very, very occasionally Java and C++), but what does it mean to you? Does it make you feel more accomplished or better about yourself, or is it sort of an elitism thing for you?

One member (Schmit38) posted on my site's forum thanking me for my assistance. This made me feel good as it was on more of a personal level, but what does it mean to you? To me, it means a lot, as it makes me feel more human, but it angers me those that say thank you and don't genuinely mean it (I know this wasn't the case, and I know you can only really tell by body language).

What was the most someone has gone out of their way to thank you for your efforts? Discuss. :)

Even if they don't really mean it, it is better than not getting it at all. At the very least it is an acknowledgement of effort.

It feels good to help people, and I don't need them to say "thank you", but sometimes it can brighten up my day :)

nothing worse than your post with a helpful comment being the last post in a thread.

a) you don't know if they ever read it or used it -- waste of time
B) you hate them.

Very annoying.

Its nice to know the end result and a thank you would be nice as you are giving up your free time to help others.

Being English we are brought up to say thank you. If somebody takes the info and runs then next time they post you are a little bit reluctant to help them again.

Is this just me or does anybody else feel this way.

The thing that annoys me the most is those one post wonders that post a question, have it answered and never return to even acknowledge the fact many people have attempted to help them.

Yeah, I've only been on this board for 3 months, and the one post wonders are already starting to rachet up my nerves.

There's also one guy, who I WILL NOT mention who's posted 30 something questions, and never said thanks. Only when it didn't work he said "give me some codes that work", and the lovely people here continue to help him.

It really shows the ability of humans to be overly audacious, and also overly harmonious.

We need less of the first and more of the second.

I help a large number of people with their code on this board. I don't care if they say thanks - I help others because I wish to provide the community with a little payback for everything programming has given to me. Should a user choose to thank me, that's very nice, but it's not something I expect, nor does the lack of a thank you taint me towards further help.

A Thank You makes you feel a sense of accomplishment. Let's me know I contributed, but I don't expect that. I'm happy knowing I helped.

If I say a sappy answer like everyone else, can I become a mod.

When you check the users last-login & the date is the same day that they posted the question... then you know for a fact they never came back. But on a bright note, at least your technical jargon in the answer helps boost the Google SEO for this site.

I don't care if anyone says thank you to me or not. But I would really love to hear whether my post really helped the user or not. People should at least do that, because if someone else had the same problem and comes to this thread, he will not be sure of whether the thing is really helpful or not, until he tries it.

I don't mind helping people and not getting thanked. I do not like it when they get angry because you couldn't understand their question.

It's nice to get thanks for help, but in most cases I'm the one writing "thanks for help" ;-)
