Java MMORPG Under Construction

Posted 14 February 2008 - 09:15 PM

Well now I'll mention why my FPS (http://www.dreamincode.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=39897&st=0) was put back on hold.
For probably close to a year myself and a few others have been working on a 3D Java MMORPG using the JLWG Library.

Not much information will be given out at this time but I will mention we have managed to set up a network capable of holding 8 people on my 55 KB/sec upload (meaning if underload these numbers don't change significantly we are looking at like 120 people on a cheap dedicated server). Their still is no player models or texturing... so you get almost a first person view of things in the following screenshot.

Also mentioned I still haven't been able to figure out how texturing Quake 2 models works so everything on the screen is given a default color for now.
The red thing in the screenshot below is a sword, I have to change the angle on the weapon... yes it is interactive, you can pick it up and it dissapears but that's it.
Brown is floor and sky, white is certain walls and black is opposing walls.

Hopefully in the next few days one of us gets around to the begining of player handling to make players visible, followed by working items, textured objects, an interactive GUI, and so forth.

Stay tuned, if the project keeps on being developed it might turn out quite promising.

One of my buds helped me out with texturing and now the game looks a little more lively.

Discussion of how mapping is going to work is a huge issue with us, we would like to switch to the bsp tree from Quake 2 or 3 but we haven't thought of how to overcome the sizing limitations.
So far we thought of making the map multi-level and when you hit the edge of a layer it teleports you to the next/previous layer.

I recommend setting up a small photobucket/other photo hosting site account, and put all of the screenshots up. If you do this, you won't have to post them here. Also, it sounds incredible. Need sound producers? I'm more of a musician then a programmer... Lol.

Alright guys, a few updates we have full texturing on maps and models, a main menu is partially complete, lighting has been improved.

We need artists though, started a GUI but without artists we can't really show any further screenshots.

No clue, we have jobs and some of the guys have families... this is really just a side project that may not ever get finished.
