For probably close to a year myself and a few others have been working on a 3D Java MMORPG using the JLWG Library.
Not much information will be given out at this time but I will mention we have managed to set up a network capable of holding 8 people on my 55 KB/sec upload (meaning if underload these numbers don't change significantly we are looking at like 120 people on a cheap dedicated server). Their still is no player models or texturing... so you get almost a first person view of things in the following screenshot.
Also mentioned I still haven't been able to figure out how texturing Quake 2 models works so everything on the screen is given a default color for now.
The red thing in the screenshot below is a sword, I have to change the angle on the weapon... yes it is interactive, you can pick it up and it dissapears but that's it.
Brown is floor and sky, white is certain walls and black is opposing walls.

Hopefully in the next few days one of us gets around to the begining of player handling to make players visible, followed by working items, textured objects, an interactive GUI, and so forth.
Stay tuned, if the project keeps on being developed it might turn out quite promising.
