Built a new system

Posted 24 February 2008 - 06:48 PM

So I decided it was time to build a new computer to overclock. My current system is really well equipped but I had some extra money and I wanted to switch to intel for some fun. So here are some specs, what you all think?

Mobo - ASUS P5K, Intel P35 chipset
CPU - Intel Quad Core Q6600 running at 2.4ghz
Ram - XMS DDR800 4gb total (2 x 2gb)
Graphics Card - Currently running EVGA 7800GT OC from old system but im waiting for the new 9800GT to come out next month
OS - Vista 64-bit business

Besides that the rest is basic and still under construction. I still need to get a bunch of things I just ran out of money for the month. I will pushing the processor from its stock 2.4ghz to 3.6ghz on air by the end of march.

What do you mean by "on air" ?

Using air cooling, not water cooling or anything fancier. The Core2Quad Q6600 'SLACR' chip is known for being a wonderful overclocker. You can push it to about a 50% overclock, on not much more than stock cooling.

I like the set up, throw in a couple of 500GB Western Digital SATA drives..... Mmmm.. :)

I decided not to going with water cooling because my last system was nice but a pain. I ran it on WC to OC my FX-55 but the WC is noisy, cant bring it to lans without fear of having a hose break, water leak, or just something bad. I also went with air like as you said this CPU dose really well on just air and with a 50% increase in speed that is really good for me. I might down the road go with a Vapor Phase cooling solution but those are $800+ but will get a crazy OC and temps below 0 degrees C.

Hard drives I will probably throw some 4 250gb SATA2 drivers in their to run raid 0+1 at some point. Right now I just need to save for my 9800GT and a new cpu cooler to get going.

Also just found out my friend got the same processor (Microcenter $200 great deal) and is building a crazy system. He got 8gb of ram to run VM ware and found out it VM wont work with his new motherboard lol.

I have spent around $700+ so far on parts. It will more then likely run around $1500-1600 once done but that will be awhile.

I'm guessing that he wanted extreme expandability.

I'm betting that a laptop w/ 4 SATA drives + 9800GT would not offer much more in the way of mobility than a desktop. And, if this is the mobo, I don't think it's for a laptop.

Personally, I'd rather have a desktop over a laptop any day. I don't care about mobility, size, weight... I care about flexibility and power. And a desktop beats a laptop in both of those categories.

That was a option but like said any laptop that I would uses instead of my desktop would be crazy. I have looked into and used one of the new Alienware laptops which is a desktop replacement. They are so heavy I would never move it from my desk + cost + heat + cant upgrade much = no a option for me. But thats just me, I have a couple friends that have high end laptops but its for their pro gaming events were they dont want to fly around with a desktop.

Plus this desktop is only going to be about $1500 he said. A Laptop with those specs would cost so much you could probably build 4 or so of these systems.

I love the specs that you have for the system.
For me, I would like to have both. I am in college, and we do a ton of programming in class and there is no way to being a desktop to class...I have tried too bulky, plus the company that I work for sends me places occassionally, and I plan to travel for personal use as well, but I want the desktop to do everything on when I am home, and it would also give the wife something to do when she is home. Also, both systems would be able to be used to build additional systems.
I had built my first systems when I was 15 yrs old, and have just started building/repairing laptops.
