First Time Online Game (Different)

Posted 25 February 2008 - 08:33 PM

I know some basic HTML and CSS. If it will be helpful.

I am looking to create an online game. It is not one of those that you have to download, or anything like that. Nothing like Halo online or other games similar to that. I am not sure how to explain it. I would like it to be similar to that of a game called Horseland.com

I am not even sure what kind of coding it would take. So I do not know where to look for help. I have looked at the source, but again I am only a beginner at HTML and CSS. I know just enough to make layouts, and fix other peoples screw ups... lol.

If needed I can create an account for some one to help me. You must have an account to see the site. Please let me know.

Thank you for all the help!

First things first.

You are going to want to look at a language such as PHP & MySQL - you aren't going to be developing an online game anytime soon exclusively using CSS & HTML.

This should start you off at least.

Yup, you'll definitely need something running server side to run a game.

You don't need anything server-side if the game doesn't interact with other players. If the game is single-instance one player only, then you could quite happily build one with just HTML + CSS (choose your own adventure style). Or use some Javascript to do something a bit more fancy.

If it does need interact, then yes, then learning a server side technology, and SQL would be essential.

Thank you. I am not sure how to explain the game. I was told that it is a forum based game. You have a home page that only you can make changes to. You can look for other animals, other players, buy things from a store, and talk to other members via messages as well as through talk channels (typing, that is updated every 30 sec.)

So it is sort of interactive, but not in the sense of a shoot'em up game or anything. So I still need to learn PHP and SQL, correct?

I can view the coding and under stand most it, but my programs do not. I use, easyweb, for my random webpages, but mostly NVU. I also have front page, that I use some times.

I can either create an account for members of <DIC> to log in to view the pages or take screen shots to better explan what I am looking to do if needed.

Thank you for your help.

Yup you will need some server interaction from the sound of it. PHP and MySQL is a good start. Tons of great information about both on the interwebz. :)

Best of luck!

If all you're looking for are testing grounds, the "Puma" package will probably suit your needs just fine - although you will want to make sure that they have PHP and MySQL available. Another thing to check before signing up is how many MySQL databases they supply you with.

They do support PHP and SQL.. I only get 1 SQL data base. How many will I need or should I have?

On top of that even - like girasquid said, good for testing you will definitely need a better hosting package once you go mainstream with your game.

Will it work for even a few months maybe until the game gets some members? or should I get a bigger one even before then? I am looking for a kind of cheap host until I get members...

It will work for the time being. Do make sure you are allowed multiple databases.

Yeah, small will be fine when you're just starting out. If it starts to take off though, you will need to upgrade - there's only so much you can squeeze out of a plan.

If you are only using that server for your game, you should only need one database. As long as you have at least one database, you should be fine.
