Personally I am waiting for GW2 (GuildWars 2) to come out (2010ish), but the beta is supposed to open sometime 4th quarter this year, so I hope it is an open beta and I can join.

Except it's not... You get the vast majority of XP from quest turn ins. There are a lot of "grinding" quests, ie: go kill X of Y and return, but what can you do? There's only so much one can do with a game... If the entire game were "run and talk to this guy" then cutscene, then the game would be a) huge and

The community is fun, and the only problems I have with WoW are the same problems you get with any MMO: Gold traders (only $4.99/1000 gold. Buy Now!!! PISS OFF!!!!!) ruining the in-game economy on the older and more populated servers, and beggars (can you give me 1g coz i is 1337!!11!!!).
The gameplay itself is rather fun. Controls are similar to many FPS games, there are quite a few professions to supplement your adventuring career, and a number of different classes to choose from.
Granted, some of the quests can be very similar (kill x for y), but it is less the quests and more the classes which make those quests different. Besides, apart from the quests, there is still a lot to do. I occasionally spend a few hours just wandering around new zones (to me) exploring.

They also change the game.
For example: 10xp required to hit 70. From level 1. That's one kill. Some of the other mods are faster gold gain or faster experience gain. It's damn near impossible to find a private server that doesn't change the rules in some way.
There are actually a couple servers out there with the goal of being completely Blizzlike. http://tru-wow.com is one (realmlist: truwowonline.com)
However, because the 3rd party wow servers don't have $10^9s coming in, and a host of developers and testers, the software the 3rd party servers use is not going to be the same quality as the real blizzard servers.
On the flip side, the in-game communities are smaller, and there aren't gold farmers running around. When I say smaller, I mean a few hundred might be on at any given time.
I found that I really liked tru-wow.

Let me ask you something? Do you go out and party at the clubs or go to friends houses to drink? I spend less money for something entertaining and safe, then those who go out every weekend and get hammered and possibly drive drunk. And for me its a stress relief, as well as a way for me to talk to my family when I am not able to see them. Yes my family plays and most of my best friends in real life, not in game. But we know when to break away to the outside world too. I pay about 11 dollars a month for the game and frankly thats less then a 12 pack of beer anymore not to mention the amount of gas to get to a club. Sorry but I would rather play WOW.

plus, it entertains me for a month as opposed to maybe spending triple that on a single night out. And yes, most of my friends play WoW too, so there is still the social aspect of it too.

I understand your argument, but any MMORPG is far inferior to human interaction. Just because one goes out does not mean they are going to get "hammered". You're forgetting those that enjoy the physical company of humans, without the need to drink heavily or do anything dangerous.

I meant in the physical company of others. You know, away from the microchip box. I'm stuck here because transportation does not come easy to me (it's hard for me to be anywhere with others), but I always look forward to things such as the Japanese study session I will go to tomorrow. Being around real people makes me feel warm as long as they're friendly, if I am away from that for too long, it begins to feel quiet and lonely around.
I can't imagine how people can go without the personal interaction of others for so long. With all these "iTards" over the internet, I have even more persuasion to seek the company of people.
This right here, on this forum, is just something I do to idle time away in short times between classes, before I fall asleep, ect. Internet interaction is only a small distraction.
