Protection for my pc....

Posted 02 March 2008 - 04:26 PM

Hi all

I have just installed Fedora 7 on my pc and use easyBCD as a boot manager for Vista and Fedora 7(is this a good approach?)But my main question was regarding pc security for Vista, as I know I should not require anything for linux. What do I need to protect my pc and keep it in tip-top operating condition?

AVG For Free

I just grabbed AVG 7.5 virus protection, AVG rootkit and AVG anti-spyware. Are the free versions good enough? Also, I ve just read a thread here about Comodo Firewall Pro, going to install it. So, do you think with the AVG stuff and CFP for a firewall, will keep my pc safe, or should I grab some other software? I was using McAfee previously, but it was a system hog, so wanted something more efficient, but as McAfee was an all-in-one, I did not have to worry about a separate firewall, virus protection, spyware, malware, trojans etc, so now I am thinking I need separate things to keep my system safe....

I used just the AVG for Free and never once had any issues. Im running both Ubuntu 7.10 & Vista as a Dual Install on my Lappy. And on my Desktop I have XP Pro SP2 with AVG For Free as well.

This is misinformation. Linux is primarly virus free due to the nature of its creation, as well as 'security through obscurity', same as Apple and OSX. Linux is no more virus immune than windows. The reason there are few viruses is because people don't take the time to write them so that they will do things on linux boxes. You get a lot more results attacking Windows boxes, because there are more out there, and because linux users are generally more prone to knowing how to stay away from downloading viruses and whatnot.

I usually have clamav installed in any linux distribution I'm running, and, even though it lacks the 'Resident Shield' of most of the Windows AV clients, it's still an extra layer of protection.
