Hey I'm a first year university student. I just started C programming in January and I'm in love with it - can't get enough of it. I'm planning on starting Java on my own now. Any encouragement on that??
Will i be able to do it on my own with the confidence and drive i have?
Or do i need to wait till my class begins Java which isnt isnt for a year or so more?

It wouldn't hurt to start learning it before your class starts. You should be able to pick it up, its not really that bad, and there are a ton of web sites out there that do a good job of helping you learn it.
This site has a lot of great tutorials you should check out.
Good luck!
