When someone is in check, can you defend your king with a piece and at the same time check the other king?
I'm almost sure you can, but I want to make sure because...
Today I was playing chess with someone, and my king of g1 was in check with a queen that was placed on e3. My opponent had his king on h6, I had a bishop on h4 and my queen was on h3....
I move Bf2+ to defend my check, and at the same it's check because my queen on h3 was checking the other king.
Grr, I could have taken his queen, but he and some other guy said "No, you can't do that. You can't reply with check when you're in check".

You can if it removes you from check. Otherwise it's forcing a stalemate, and you will automatically lose.

When you're in check, you must get out of check. If you can't, you loose.
That said, if you get out of check and by doing so put you opponent in check, that's just bonus. As long as no other pieces had you in check, to move you're describing clearing takes you out of check and most likely results in the loss of their queen.
Sounds like your peanut gallery was having you on. Sorry.

I hate playing chess with people who think they know the rules and totally butcher them, and worse yet I hate when their stupid friend is backing them up like your prediciment. I got in the biggest fight with my friend about the move "en passant", he's one of those people who NEVER admit to being wrong, even when proven otherwise. Of course this was no exception.... Pisses me right off I tell ya

lol, of all the rules in chess ( and, seriously, there aren't that many ), en passant is probably the most likely to draw blood. If the person you're playing against has never heard of it, which happens often, they usually think you're making it up. I've avoided mentioning it, and actively avoided it, just because I knew the other player was clue free.

@ captainhampton:
Yeah, have happened to me many times. Just like today, I was pretty sure that you could do that, but they were "sure" you couldn't.
And have had other discussions about things like that.
And happens the same, they never admit they are wrong.

I use to play professional chess, and most beginners would use it to their advantage on newbies.(en pasent). but after you get into higher ratings i.e 1600+ i would say that your guaranteed they know it. though most pick it up before they even get to 1200. Ive always wanted to make my own chess engine. CS+ Chess + Media = My favorite things, fortunately i cant play chess as much anymore, in fact i quit about 4 years ago almost due to school and all. But i would like to go back to playing after school as a hobby. I don't think ill attempt professional chess anymore, its a full time job really.
