So how long do we think it will be before either of the big two (AMD/Intel) will crack the 128bit barrier?
I honestly think that it will be next year, or the latest the year after that to begin development of the 128 bit X86 architecture, and maybe another year before one of them hit's the streets, more than enough time for Apple to pick a partner and start co-operating with them.
Regardless of whether it's Intel or AMD (I'm an AMD fan myself, purely cos they seem to work better with my NVidia card than an Intel), we should be enthusiastic about this next step for Apple coming into the mainstream.
Remember the more profit they can make from sales, means lower prices in the long run. How many of us can honestly say we own our very own Mac? I know I can't because it's just not practical for my work (yet!) and certainly not economical just for a bit of Photoshop and Quark work, which I can perform equally as well with Windoze (if maybe a little slower).
I would dearly love to switch from M$ and their extremely proprietary (mis)operating systems, but Unix/Linux currently doesn't offer enough software to aid the average webdeveloper/graphic designer that is easy to use. (Before you flame, I have a dual boot machine with Windows 2000 and RedHat7.3)
Just my tupenny worth...

AMD chips are very stable and fast. I have 2 PC's, an AMD Athlon and an Intel P3 and the athlon has performed better for me (even though it has lower mhz).
Also, mac's suck cause I've never even used one and anyone that likes them is stupid and I'm right and your dumb and I'll criticize you if you disagree and make fun of your grammar.

This is a perfect example of the majority of pc users out there that don't like macs...they've never even used them. How can you judge something without trying it out for yourself? I respect the opinions of those who have tried something for awhile and like/dislike something, but when it comes to people, like you, there's no point in listening. If anyone here should be labeled as "dumb" here, it's you for your naive comment. Go ahead, make fun of my grammar. You're the one with a huge run on sentence. Try using periods next time huh?

Also, I'd like to add that I'm not a Mac Evangelist or anything of the sort. I use Windows and Macs everyday. I've used both systems for years now and have a good background in both.

i've used macs alot
one of my friends and my brother-in-law had macs (pretty good ones too)
both Power PCs, but they were still quite fast, they both ended up getting rid of them and going to a 550mhz P3 and a 300mhz P2
when i asked them why, they simply said that their macs didnt have the compatability and flexability of the Pcs that they were going to get
Macs are good, fast computers
but still, theres not enought software, and when I look at businesses, i see Pcs, where my mom works, PCs, my father, Pcs, i know lots of people and absaloutly none of them Have macs (anymore)
Mac spends millions and millions of dollars each year trying to tell us that their computers are better, but when i see things like that, i realise they are just wasting money
now if they would have marketed like this when the Mac/Pcs ownidge was EQUAL, it might be worth it, but soooo many more people have Pcs then macs, it would be allmost impossible to balance out the home users to even 30%

Interesting points. However, what software are you referring to when you say that there is of flexibility and software?

im not refering to specific titles, but software in general
when i go into Future shop or Computer city, 95% of the store is PCs & PC products, and the other 5% is MAYBE mac stuff
i dont see even half the titles i see for pc for mac

well, i do see that there is less of a choice when it comes to certain application types, but most of the stuff out there for macs seems to be the best ones anyway. i have the convenience of having a apple store 7 miles away so i have all the software there
the reason there's so much more pc software at those stores is because that's what their customers are, pc users. who knows though, i feel that with the steps apple is making with their OS and their computers now, i see at the very least a decent turn around with more people experimenting and converting.
IF i were doing the switch ads, i would start making some that targeted linux users, not necessarily just the windows user base. I mean, OS X has been hailed as one of the best implementations of a unix backend, and I couldn't agree more. It's what I think linux users have been trying to develop.

let the truth be known!
thats absaloutly true, they would appeal to it & eachother.
if i could get a new comp, i'd get an I-book (or a mactop <-- cool name for a macintosh laptop)
because they are cool, the only reason i dont have one is because they are damn expensive

Macs are good, but they're way expensive. I was going to buy an iBook, but I wanted DVD and a burner, and the pc I got was $300 less...
I installed Linux on it. Heh (dual boots now w/ WinXP Home. Blah.)
I like Linux... and Linux is free. That's one thing OSX doesn't have yet.
Anyway...
I want to get a Mac next.
Maybe after I get a few more database jobs...
Edit:
Oh yeah, it's WAY FREAKING OBVIOUS that they're going to get pc cpu's to 128 (I'd be way surprised if they downgraded to 64) bit before they're using them for macs.
Don't get all wet in your pants... you won't be able to switch processors between macs and pcs... same with the memory probably.

why are you comparing a macintosh laptop with a pc desktop system? that's not fair at all.
btw... you can use the backend system of Mac OSX (darwin) on a pc for free. its not quite fully developed, but its kinda fun to play with. http://www.opendarwin.org
all you opensource junkies have another reason to back apple. they open up their backend code. the proprietary part is the GUI and such that communicate with the backend.
oh and yes.. you can switch mac/pc memory. they're using.. or at least were using, the same sdram dimms. I took one out of a mac and stuck it in a pc.. worked great.

riceraver, I was totally joking!!! I don't think Mac's suck. I was actually poking fun at Ben for being so adamant that AMD sucks, and for making fun of sloth's grammar
(I guess no one got that)
Anyway, I worked in tech support for almost 3 years and supported a huge cartographic department that was all Macs. I know a lot about them technically and their software. I personally don't prefer them (and they were a pain to support), but I know they are better for some things, and have nothing against them.
I'll be sure to add a smiley next time or something, gee wiz!!
